Are the files in the data directory the same between clients of the different OS's? If I wanted to run the Linux and Windows client from the same installation, could I just download the Windows EXEs (and some DLLs?) and put the in the Linux installation's directory? If so, where could I get the Windows EXEs alone?

The point of this is disk space and download time.

If you want to run the .exe version of Ryzom on a linux computer, you would have to do it through Wine (Windows Emulator) which is not recommended. Either way, I think you will have to download each on their own OS'es.

you can always share the following directories (link them):
save, user, My_Scenarios, examples

I'm not sure but it should be possible with the following as well:
cache, cfg, data

I'm very sure that it's imposiible with the following directories:
root, unpack

out of those the data-directory would be the most interesting one as it uses the most space (more than 6GB in my case - but my install is very old, so the folder might contain things no longer in use)

My data directory's 6.3 GiB. I think I will try linking those directories. Why wouldn't unpack work?

Edit: Why aren't the downloads labeled? : ( I just wasted a little more than an hour downloading the Linux client again. The download ending in .exe better be the Windows client.

Ah, it wasn't just ages old data then that got it so big for me - good to know. (it where less than 5 GiB when I started playing Ryzom)

Why wouldn't unpack work?.

Because it contains the downloaded patches which still need to be unpacked.
Those are files with just the patch-id as filename - no indication for which client they are.
So these contain changes to the runtime data as well and not "just" the content and config data.

Finally got around to trying this. After installing the Windows client, I deleted the following directories and symlinked the ones from the Linux client: cache, config, client, data, examples, save, user. When starting the Windows client, it complained a file didn't match the checksum. I let it redownload the file. After logging in, I have lost my hair:

and find another character likes to dress up as a Karavan when I'm not looking:

After choosing a character, I see I'm dead but somehow still walking around:

When I try the Linux client, it crashes, complaining about data/titles.packed_sheets . Updating the Linux client fixed this, but I assume the Windows client will see checksum errors again. Here are what the two characters actually look like:

Here are the files the Linux client replaced when I updated:

Wow... I didn't expect that many differences in the data directory...

data: did you try to see if the windows client has the checksum errors again? (you just said that you expect them to be back) - it's really weird that there are so many differences here...

cfg: just unlink the mini directory and use them separately again (those are the default settings for different hardware-layouts and just a few kB)

Grr, the forums refused my post "Reload detected".
A sum of my previously attempted post:
The Windows client finds checksum errors again, as expected. Anyone know of a way to turn off the Windows client doing checksums? It's obviously not on for the Linux client except during updating.

It'd be nice (though understandably probably not a high priority) for all the data directories to be the same, with separate downloads for the data directory and the rest of the client for each of the supported OS's.

Edit: It looks like the Windows client does some updates without asking. Next time I try to log into the Linux client, I get errors with the same files again.

you run both windows and linux client from linux? or do you dual boot and share partition?

I run both from linux. They both under different directories, but they share 'data' directory (symlinked from same location). I can run both clients in the same time without problems.

Hello!

#10 Доклад | Цитировать[en]

I'm trying to run both from Linux. I don't know why sharing a data directory isn't working, but the Linux and Windows clients do fight over certain files, for me.

It may be that there are differences between the linux builds... there's the official one and there's Kervala's - don't know if there are others...

This type of activity is not supported so topic moved to more appropriate forum.

Ermmm? I thought that running double clients was perfectly allowable. Or do you mean that it isn't *supported* in terms of devs worrying about it?

Yeah, it's always been that way. If you edit your clients files in an abnormal way(ie: not through in-game UI) then you lose tech support. That's not to say it's against the rules though.
