IDÉES POUR RYZOM

There should be purchasable creatures that would fight alongside players during combat and otherwise follow them around or stay placed in inventory. They would be unlocked at level 100 in fight or magic and all players are allowed up to 3 creatures.

All players, regardless of their alignment, are to able to purchase and use neutral creatures. Kami / Karavan aligned players can also use creatures from within their particular alignment, but *not* racial ones. Those who are not faction aligned *must* use either racial or neutral creatures. To use a racial creature, the player must be a citizen of that race's region.

Creatures would be similar to mektoub packers in the sense that they could potentially be summoned indefinetely, limited only by player resources (HP, Stam, Sap, etc..) and creature health. They would be ready for combat at any time, and anything you attack would be attacked by your creature as well, who is always following you similarly to a mektoub mount.

Creatures are stored in inventory but add no weight or bulk. They are summoned using special actions that are placed in the action bar. Each individual creature has their own action button. Like other actions, stanzas can be added, and summoning the creatures requires credit.

The credit is required every second. For exmaple, a creature may use 5 CPS (credit per second). HP credits, stam credits and sap credits would be used for this purpose interchangeably with eachtother just like many other attack stanzas. Credit required per second depends on level, type and training quality of creature, as well any added stanzas stay increase damaga, hit rate, health, special attacks, etc.

Creatures would be sold by "Faction Creature Merchants", "Racial Creature Merchants" and "Tame Creature Merchants" (neutral creature merchant). Creature upgrade stanzas, credit stanzas and skill stanzas would be bought from "Creature Trainer"s. Alghough the creature stanzas would be completely seperate from stanzas used in melee, magic and ranging, they could all be used between all creatures a player has. A player would just simply edit the "Summon (creature name)" action and apply a stanza and credit to it as needed.

There would be a whole new skill type (like Fight, Magic, Craft and Harvest) named "Summoning" that would only be available to level at level 75 in any other skill and would iteself start at level 1. At level 21, it would divide into Creature Taming (for animals) and Mind Controling (for "intelligent" creatures i.e. humanoids and faction creatures). Stanzas bought from a Summoner facilitate Summoning training.

The same summoners that allow a player to get stanzas to level their summoning, also provide players with purchasble wild creatures and lost divinities (kami / karavan creatures).

They would be created by buying a wild creature, and using stanzas to tame / mind-control your wild creature. Once player decides creature is finished, they can either choose to keep it as a personal creature or leave it in inventory. The only use of a creature plainly in inventory is to eventually sell or trade. To make a as personal creature, player would right -click creature icon in inventory and choose, "Make personal creature". Personalized creatures cannot be sold, only freed. Freed creatures cannot by retrieved or re-trained.

Depending on the level and type of stanza used to train creatures, creature level, quality and stats are affected. Creature cannot be made personal if it is higher level than your higest skill level, if you already have 3 personalized creatures or if you have not reached level 100 in fight of magic.

Creature taming could be a new occupation!

Never argue with an idiot; they will just drag you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

The idea of pets, which are able to assist in combat, is too much like certain other MMOs already out there.

The Mektoub's natural friendliness makes it the idea choice as a mount and pack animal but I think that the other creatures of Atys should be allowed to remain free, to do as they wish.

You mean "every MMO out there"? :P

There is no problem lorewise, according to the lore homins already used to have tamed ragus.

The problem is game-mechanics. In all those other MMOs, pets are part of a class, and the benefits of the pets are balanced by those classes having other weaknesses. In classless Ryzom, pets would be a pure benefit, no downsides. Everybody would be forced to have a pet.

We'd need some mechanic that controlling a pet makes you unable to perform any other combat role....

In any case, the OP's suggestions are far, far too ambitious. Let's start small eh?

I've no problem with cosmetic pets, maybe even an occupation "pet tamer" that can tame wild animals for the purpose (and provide them to other players).
This could extend to taming animals to use as mounts and pack animals maybe, replacing or expanding upon the duties of the stableboys to sell those.

Another profession might be needed to create petfood, though this could be in a second phase (introducing dietary requirements dependent on the type of animal, I doubt a zerx mount would like concentrated bales for food :) ).

But for the reasons Marelli mentions, combat pets IMO aren't a good idea.

The downside to compensate could be getting significantly less xp, such as 50% less. They would require specific kinds of food depending on the creature type, available at the stable costing a fair amount of dappers. Not to mention the player already has the negative effect of the creature being summoned at any time, during combat or not; draining the player's resources.

All other MMO's have some kind of a combat system. Just like with the combat system, they could make this interesting and high-potential feature the most unique of it's kind. It wouldn't be like regular MMORPGs, but instead it would IMO complement the originality of Ryzom.

I would also like to have tamed/purchased pets ... but I don't think we should go as far as taming named/bosses ;-) though Shalaketh as a pet would be nice ^.^
