Read all about it. But if you have any further questions, I'm really not the person to ask. That'd be someone at Winch Gate.

Your guess is as good as mine as to who specifically. Good luck with that. ;-) -bp

I think, there is a difference between walkthru and spoilers.

If you find a spoiler, you should always ticket WG to have devs aware of the problem and not publish it for a general use.

Ambassadors teleporting people everywhere is a spoiler, not an intended mechanic.

So, I think your guides to newbies are very nice, as long as they don't spoil bugs or unintended behaviour.

Congratulations Dainan, you even got the DEV's reading your blog :)

And you were instrumental in getting a bug fixed in so short of a time !

The Quill is mightier than the Sword.

And I agree with Gilgameesh, there is a difference between walkthru, spoiler and exploit. Exploits have to be ticketed and fixed.

One of the CSRs mentioned a year ago that WG was concerned that too many of the Free2Play homins were leaving the game before experiencing a taste of everything that Ryzom has to offer. The Trek is , imho, an excellent way to bring some of the taste of Ryzom to low level homins, especially if the trek leader acts as a tour guide, sometimes departing from the shortest path to show off some of the more interesting places to visit. And its a fun team event to be a part of.

So get back to telling interesting tales of Ryzom :)

Agree with all that's been said so far here.

I'd like to add more emphasis to the point that the quill beat the sword: If making exploits of bugs public on a 3rd party website that much accelerate their fixing, maybe it is time to publish some other serious exploitable bugs?

Dainan, maybe you could change your point of view a little, take it as a compliment, and make use of the apparent ability to improve Ryzom that way.

I enjoy reading your blog anyway (although I'm careful to try and skip any advice that's too detailed), and hope you're around much longer to tell your stories!

That's because the NPE storyline is ****. There's too much attention on the kitins, the factions, and the races, that the backstory is no longer told to new players. The lore on the website has been turned from an enjoyable reading book into a dull encyclopedic archival library. The copywriting on the homepage is just terrible, and full of errors. Back in the days, it used to be the case that you could follow the Ryzom story and events right from the www homepage. It showed actual activity, right now all it shows is a terribly low activity on updates and even outdated posts that are dated 2 years ago. There's really a lack of direction there. It's nice to have an ancient banner of 'BEST STORY', but there's not even a single piece of storyline to be found anywhere at all on the homepage. I don't think you can really pull in many new players with such poor communication of content. You can do all the events you want, but if nobody hears about them, then nobody will have discovered them, and then they won't gain you any new players.

And I personally encourage you to post bugs and exploits, that are unrelated to Ryzom specific missions, on the public bug tracker of the open source Ryzom Core project.

Sorry for being slightly hostile here, WG. :)

Thanks! I should probably clarify a few points while I've got a minute:

- I don't have a problem with bugs being fixed and, actually, submit quite a few bug reports myself. However, I have been told on these kinds of things in the past that they're not bugs so much as they are "features", and since knowledge of this particular trick was already out there I didn't see it as such and therefore posted a walkthrough.

It would have been appreciated greatly if Winch Gate had made the fix (if it was indeed a bug to begin with - still no official word from Winch Gate on that) and said as much after the fact, rather than making quiet fixes and having players discover mid-trick that it doesn't work as I posted it (thus impunging my credibility as a writer, which I find intolerable).

- I would love to be able to take it as a compliment, but I can't. Again, my credibility as a writer is very important, both to me personally and to what I do for a living. I can't risk that over a game. That's just silly.

- I'll be around still, but nowhere near as much and, certainly, not blogging about it. But that's no big loss. There's plenty of people out there that have tons more information on the game than I ever would have had anyway, and I'm happy to step aside and let 'em do what they do since it seems more palatable to Winch Gate.

Hope that helps! Now, if you'll excuse me, Dainan's just made quite a splashy entrance - literally - back in his hometown of Narak, and he's due at the Oasis with Morris and Dacia to finally get a real Godsdamned steak after so many months away.

And, of course, he's got stories to tell his friends! :-) -bp
