I read about that affair in the forums long ago, and while I understood the need for punishment, I considered it regrettable, as it hit active and passionate players.
No doubt they were at fault, but as stated already in a different context, the disciplinary system of Ryzom is not without blame either.
There are only two kinds of measures in case of transgressions, namely ridiculous ones on the one hand and overly harsh ones on the other hand. Either the perpetrator gets scolded or banned for a few days, which is hardly intimidating, or receives an Atys death penalty. This is the span of either a little smack or immediate beheading.
There should exist something intermediate, a continuum from revoking skill levels to confiscation and/or destruction of ingame properties, which would pose real risk and threat to cheaters, botters, and the like, without driving or commanding them out of our world (of cause, there are cases where lifetime ban is appropriate, but those are rare).
In the particular case above, I would, especially considering the server merge having taken place in the meantime, like to raise a petition to the devs and CSR to lift this lifetime ban, and allow the former wrongdoers back into our world. And please consider improvements of the disciplinary system.
