IDEAS FOR RYZOM

I think the range fight aspect to ryzom is way too simple / boring. Having only guns with relatively low DPS (compared to other weps) is pretty discouraging and so atm the only practical use for range fighting is getting skill points to use mostly in other skills; at least for me.

I'd would be awesome if range fighters could at least compete with others of the same level, but the disadvantage atm is too much. There needs to be more special attacks for range fighting only, besides hit rate. For example a 3 bullet burst, a super accurate sniper shot, etc. The balance for those of course would mirror other skills in using more resources to do special actions. (Perhaps they'd have to adjust the weight on guns to increase their basic resource cost.

Another that could be done to make ranging no longer obsolete could be archery. Imagine actually being able to fairly fight an equally skilled player of the opposite skill type (melee / range). It would make for a much more dynamic gameplay too, in both PvP and PvE.

The details of archery could get pretty complex, but we have to start somewhere. Besides that it would use arrows (also would be another craft), I havne't thought about what else archery would mean.

I was also thinking of another idea, but not so sure how others' would like it. There could be of course the standard auto-aim, but imagine that not having auto-aim is the disadvantage to ranging that balances it's new higher DPS and range. What I imply is that ranging could become the skill tree without any kind of auto-aim. Perhaps crosshairs could show up when a gun is in hand.

Now don;t get me wrong, I'm not trying to turn ryzom into an FPS. It would still be very far from that anyway. I'm just saying all-in-all that ranging is an obselete branch in the tree of ryzom features that has a massive amount of potential; I'm just trying to get the discussion started. :)

Rifles played a part in PvP long ago. Launcehrs and Autolaunchers played a major part in PvP not too long ago as well. Range weapons are not as interesting/strong as other weapons but they can still mean the difference between life and death.

Archery would be a step back in technology. What is the point of that when we already have the technology of guns. Archery would be even weaker and have less interest/importance than range already does.

I'm a master n mulitple things and have been defeated in a duel by a pistol and launcher. They are equal in ways and in others they are not. It is the way you use them. Pistol is not supposed to be a major weapon. But it has its advantages.

Adding those extra actions could be good. Adding crosshairs would be a pain though. Especially for people who have terrible steady hands and it would be a pain having to continually do it when normally you pick a target and sit back till you run out of ammo or it dies.

guns aint that bad was killed couple of hours ago by a bowrifle in pvp :), don't forget they can run while shooting.

ps. melee won 3 of the 4 rounds but was only some testing that was going on

Would not mind the old fashioned bow and arrow.

But saying that range weapons are obsolete is not true, I have been killed way too many times during OP battles :D

And it is a good thing that Ricke is in KL too, or I would be dead on a daily basis. I beleive that he mastered Launcher this weekend.

Well:

1) archery is a nowadays sport (and way to hunt, if you like to) not medieval only
(combat bow, precision, sport)

2) swords can be considered "a step back in technology" too, when you can craft pistols and a couple of uzies for close combat. ;)
(on the contrary, daggers are not, as you already have "ka-bars", "bowies" and combat knives ;))

3) I also feel the lack of bows and arrows :(.....

4) maybe (suggestion), to be preferred as ranged weapon, the bow may act as a "silent snipe weapon" with sort of "time bonus" on mobs: they react with delay (or can't react at all, at high ranged skill levels), randomly, as it's harder to find where the arrow comes from, not having the noise of a rifle/pistol, adding a slow-movement malus also, if hit.

5) from the developing POV: it's "just to add bows/arrows pictures" (and, ok, to make arrows/bows craftable and so on) but at last is nearly the same as adding a new rifle, pistol or any other ranged weapon (just suppress the noise ;)) with the same logic.

Hope we can see some bows (even tech ones!!! compound bows :)) in Atys.
