I heard from an old friend about a full server wipe and merge, I thought that could be fun.. a fresh start!

Bah!

after reading that not all players will be reset.. I think I will give this a miss, shame as it sounded very promising.

Things are still going to be quite shaken up. Why not give it a try after the merge?

We have just been chatting, and we all come to the same conclusion... It will be exactly the same, old ryzom.. just with extra people on there.
With a full wipe it will bring challenges, power rushes, a new outlook and new adventure.

With this (so called) wipe it will just mean more people stood around the stables, looking pretty.

Come on WG give us something to work for!!

I for one am glad I can keep the lvls I have been working on for the last six months. A full wipe will only be nice for the bored few that have seen it all before AND have the time to do it all again; a very small minority.

I'm sorry but the only thing a full wipe would do is result in Ryzom almost certainly closing 6-12 months down the road. There would be a massive amount of ragequitting and the new players attracted by the idea of a fresh start would not be enough to offset the effects of losing the majority of the existing, proven-loyal playerbase. Dumping an existing playerbase in favor of a potential new playerbase that may or may not turn out to be viable is exactly the kind of thinking that drove Star Wars Galaxies' "New Game Enhancements", and the only reasons that game survived that disastrous course change was 1) the fact it was owned by Sony Online Entertainment, a large company with extensive resources and 2) the Star Wars IP. Even then, SWG only survived in a relatively limping manner, its population dwindling steadily over the years that followed the initial sharp drop, until it closed six years after the NGE.

In the beginning of this transition i thought the 2x exp on subbed compared to f2p was one of the worst change. But now i think about it differently:

On Silan, 2x Exp simply does no good. Doing the Missions will get everyone to the levels they need (20 or 25).
Up to 50 on ML 2x Exp is handed out as mission reward (~5 stacks of Q50 cats).
Up to 80 on ML grinding still is very easy and quickly done.
After 80 a soft cap comes into place, slowing down progression gradually until it hits the hard cap at 125.

You can still do occupations and make some cats on your own, exploring another nice feature of ryzom as a side effect and getting plenty of consumables that help in grinding too. F2P players can also do some civ faction runs to get additional cats (and sap crystals).

For the new beginning: I think there will be some kind of a new beginning anyways. Players that keep their levels will be most interested in getting their own gear again and not sit at stables destroying the market for low-level equipment from young crafters.

F2P + Recless toons will be quite a lot of low-lvl players who start at once, not being bothered by high-level players (see above). As progression is different for different players the low-level player base will continue to be large for quite some time (maybe a year). During that year newbies will get a lot of people to play with and hopefully being low-lvl will be so much fun to draw more and more new players into playing ryzom.

During the Q&A session yesterday, we were told that there would be no cats from any sources, not just OPs. This was from the Event Guide; so, he may have it wrong as the post only indicates OPs don't produce cats...will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Perhaps the long time veterans know better what a full wipe would ultimately result in. I agree with Ixolite though. A full server wipe for everyone who plays is more exciting and open ended than a pseudo-wipe where most will just pay to keep their levels and skills. I guess I do agree that more veterans would quit than folks who feel like me or Ixo would rejoin, so what they are doing probably makes the most financial sense. It doesn't mean that I wouldn't prefer a full wipe for all, though, and will probably pass on this new "beginning".
