Yes this! Leagues and sports (including more PvP in arena etc etc) might also foster some organized gambling...which might add a few more layers of depth to Atys.

I can understand some people will want the original version as well. I think speeding the game up and making it a bit more like a Ryzom version of table hockey might make it more fun to watch. FvF should already be possible just by setting up the teams that way I would think.
Races are a great idea. Bonus if it's through a complicated (and dangerous) region. Relay races also a possibility. More than anything I'm hoping some creative and organized people (with some minor help from devs) may be able to bring an extra spark of life to Atys.
The devs can only do so much and usually the results end with speaking to an NPC to get a mission you've done 300 times.
