Alright, I signed up yesterday, created my character, and spent the next 4 hours training. Got totally sucked into the game.

I've never played an RPG before, hardly played any games at all. Now I understand what everybody has been talking about all these years...

Any hints for a total n00b, not just to this game, but to MMORPG in general?

Woha!

Study with all the trainers on Silan. Study with the Kami and, yes, with the Karavan as well. Train with Chiang the Strong. Listen to every word they say and read every word they write. So many homins are in a rush to reach the mainland that they neglect these first lessons because they believe the mainland must be so much more wonderful than little Silan.

It is true, the mainland does have much more to offer but it will not teach you what Chiang and the Rangers can teach you while on Silan.

(( Welcome to the Root Ball Munenori! Do all the Silan missions, really. If you are leaning toward the Kami, do the Karavan missions and vice versus. Even if you don't want to harvest and craft, do the missions anyway. Read the Lore, start questioning the factions: Kami or Karavan? Citizen of your home nation or another? Or remain neutral? Each has its own benefits but what would your character do?

Finally, ask questions. We're only a little scary around here. ;) ))

Welcome, Munenori

Do all the missions you can find, even if they don't sound interesting. They are usually more interesting than you first thought. If you get bored, do another craft / mission / whatever - you can always go back and complete the first thing.

Don't worry about gaining skills you might not use much. They may come in very handy later on.

Ask around in game - there are people on Silan who have been everywhere and done it all, but even other noobs may have solved the problem / found the place / etc. before you. If they don't know, after you find out go tell them. Share your knowledge.

Be prepared to help anyone - and to accept help. Collaboration is the key to several missions on Silan and on the Mainland it is even more important.

Take time to watch the movement of the animals. They move around the landscape in complex patterns, some dependent on the season. So for instance the Javings south of the ruins will move around in groups. On minute you're safe, the next minute you've got 5-6 of these things attacking you.

Like Gorran said, don't be in a hurry to reach the Mainland. Silan is more than just a training area and if you take the time to explore you will learn stuff that will be invaluable once you get to the Mainland.

Talk to other people, help them, get helped if you face difficoult tasks. Though almost any quest on silan can be done alone it is fun to have company doing them together. If you have some positive experience add them to your friends list (you don't need to ask). You might want to refer to them (send them a tell) later.

If you don't like what is happening in your team, tell them and leave. It is unpolite to leave a team without notice but it is more fun doing things in your own way and pace. Or a way that somewhat fits your way and pace. If anybody wants to help you consider if you want to accept the help (a million dapper gift can buy you anything but it is much more rewarding to earn it on your own - just an example).

If you are talking to people in town you'll notice many of them not replying to you. Most of the time that's not because they are unpolite egoists but because town always is a place to sort out things, be afk (grab a drink, cook a meal etc.), customize new actions and much more. If you find somebody doing the same animals you do, ask them to do it together or at least say hello (or target them and do a /wave emote or similar). Not saying anything sometimes leads to misunderstandings.

If you die and somebody is near by (a blue dot on your compass) give them time to heal you up. That's good for you and rewarding to those homins who help you (you might want to say thank you). Sometimes you will get to know people this way or get tips how to proceed without getting hurt to much. If they don't come to your rescue, try to tell them you're in need of help.

There are many different ways to communicate in ryzom from the start:
- around chat (type /s or select around): people can hear you for about 25m
- shouting (type /sh): people can hear you for about 250m. a good way to ask that blue dot mentioned earlier to come to your rescue.
- team chat (/p or select team): your team can hear you
- region chat (/r or select region): people all over silan can hear you, even in the jungle
- universe chat (/u or select universe): all atys can hear you
- tells (type /t Name to open a tell window): only the person named Name can hear you. A tell window will open on his side as well so he can easily reply.

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to do all of the missions before I move on.

I get killed a lot, but gradually getting better. Thank goodness for suckling yubas.

As I am quite the noob to Atys as well, thanks for all the replies! Tips are very helpful. I wish I had a log of everything the npcs say to me. I've started writing things down in my notes now!

Hello Munenori! Nice to meet another noob. Say hello if you see me in Silan!

May be easier to screenshot all the dialog. Control+ F10. The jpg will be stored in your Ryzom folder.

Use /chatLog

That stores all the text that appears in your chat window. You can use Zyroom (search google for it) to read back the log file with ease.
