I would like to make inventory of the known types of competition here in Ryzom. This is good for me since I like competing with others for fun and in order to improve my own player skills, but I am sure there are and will be more players prone to this kind of activities (not necesarily griefers as someone could say...)

Competition might of course include PvP but doesn't need to be limited to it. I will be making a list as second post from what you community members add.

Thanks in advance.

POLL: Competition means playing against other players for victory (directly or indirectly).

(WORK IN PROGRESS)

List of known competition types:

For Profit
* Outpost battle: guild alliances fighting each other for the ownership of an outpost.
* Supernodes: (info required: faction pvp? team pvp? just a digging race? supreme mats?)
* Vote for Fyros Akenak: social contest to gain a title that grants *** (info required)

For Sport
* Races: on foot, riding mektoubs, sneaking through aggro...
* Contests: digging contest, crafting contest, social contest, finding objects...
* Hide and seek in Pyr: unteamed, without target system, compass to 25m.
* Yubo ball: (info required)
* Duels: 1 vs 1 combat.
* Matis Arena: team vs team combat.
* Assassin Season: "There used to be a few weeks (months?) each year during which players would put out contracts on each other, and other players would accept those contracts and head out to try and kill the target, for payment/prestige/lols/whatever. It was fun - the assassins were always very gracious about it all and didn't try to kill people in a nasty/malicious way (some even went as far as to only attack their targets when the targets were surrounded by guildies and the assassins were on their own), but it was sort of a matter of good sportsmanship for the target to agree to fight the assassin, and much entertainment was provided." -Nysha
* ...anything you can imagine and convince others to do.

Forbidden
* Competing against other players for killing a boss: considered kill-stealing, details here.

As discovered during Uni chat last night, we sometimes have different definitions of what "Competition" is. In order for the poll to be relevant, it might help to define what is meant by competition.

From your post, it sounds like you're concentrating on Player vs Player types of competition ("competing with others"), as opposed to players competing with themselves to better themselves at tasks. I'd include such tasks as sneaking through aggro-infested areas to be among the self-competition types.

There is also the Matis arena, for slightly more combat-oriented competition.

We have the vote for Fyros Akenak, which ultimately distills down to a competition, if there are more than five participants.

Competing against Kitins sounds like a great competition to me. How many laps around the Wastelands can you make before a KP eats you? =)

Five categories of conflict from my old english lit class (supposedly every great story embodies the resolution of one of these conflicts):
    Homin against Homin
    Homin against Self
    Homin against Community
    Homin against Nature
    Homin against (Super)natural
I bet we can think of many Ryzomian examples for each of these. And I agree with ...

POLL: Competition means playing against other players for victory (directly or indirectly).

This, taken generally, would be fine. But remembering back to the discussion on Uni, it may not be so clear.

For example, put two people or two teams of people playing basketball with (against) each other. In one situation, players from one team kick the opposing team members in the crotch, take the ball, and score. This is a "competition" and the scoring team scored, so they are technically "winning".

If your idea of competition is to "win using any means available", then that's not what most people here would want, so it would change how they vote in the poll. Hopefully, from the list of examples so far, you can get an idea of what is acceptable here and what isn't, although your inclusion of kill-stealing on bosses is not encouraging. "Competition" here is not cut-throat. It is not "do whatever you can to ensure victory".

What does competition mean to you, Huek?

I am not sure how to answer that Erizon, but I will try.

That conversation was about kill-stealing. I was curious after reading in-game rules, where it's stated that killing a boss while other team is already trying can grant you a punishment from CSRs. Forbidden.

Bosses, like outposts, are scarce resources and they are not in private instances. Limited number for the whole server means conflict, and conflict is part of online games. It makes sense to me and to most of players around the world.

It was said that the very high level bosses have lots of minions who need to be killed in order to reach the final fight, so it was problematic if another team came to get the boss for free despite of the first team's efforts.

I called that being opportunist, others said that was being lame. Different opinions are healthy. But then I was called a griefer myself and asked to leave the game (unpolitely). It is not the first time I see this behaviour from old players and nothing damages the game more than that.

Back to the point, there are many ways to handle that situation. Should the second team fight for the boss? Should they leave the area? Should that area be marked as arena? The answer for this question defines what kind of community you are.

Anyhow the goal of this thread is making clear what kinds of competition are supported by the game and allowed by the community, so new players know what they can find. Let's stick to the subject please.
