DISCUSSIONS AROUND ONGOING PROJECTS

I am not making myself clear. Apologies.

Take a look at these two scenarios, using the numbers provided in the original Lore thread.

The first uses 1% marriage, while the other uses 5%.
The distribution of marriage is broken down to 25% of total marriages for simplicity, but ultimately it doesn't really matter. It also presumes (erroneously) an offspring from all marriages.

As you can see over time Matis will take over the population. Considering the death rate, (which is using human instead of homin,) if the death rate to birth rate outpaces in any race, that race will die out. Except Matis.

For example, in 22 generation (approx 450 human years) there will be twice as many Matis as Zorai. By generation 50, there are three times as many Matis as Zorai... In 2,000 years the Zorai will be rarely seen, like a "seasonal named MOB", like an endangered species.

My first thought at looking at all this is to wonder why people are assuing that all four races have the same number of years per generation, and why all four races have equally strong reproductive urges. In some cultures, one offspring is enough. Other cultures may be more into large families. I think it safe to say that each race has it's own, unique culture and therefore differing standards on how many offspring to have. That will have an effect on population growth.

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.

Gid -- Nudge made that assumption (and the assumption of one child per marriage) for simplicity of numbers, not for any thought of "reality".

However, what I see is that the absolute number of all four races continues monotonically upwards. The *fraction* of Zorai decreases, but all four races have substantial populations. This does not correspond in my mind to "endangered species".

Of course long before 2000 generations have passed, the Great Dragon will awaken and all projections will suffer failure.

i'm confused, is this about children produced in lore, or in players own personal profiles?

With known instances of reproduction, I just assumed either only certain families were able to reproduce- or their fetuses were implanted by kara/kami 'helpers.' We also don't see as much death as should normally occur... likely due to higher powers changing homin biology..

ok, just read the Lore F.A.Q. and am quite horrified...

(It is about as helpful as saying that there is no sand in the desert :( )

To produce such complicated explanations when the most simple is obvious. There are very few children on Atys because homins are not human. In character they know very little about their origin, their minds having been tampered with by kara and kamis... The ability to reproduce is seen in a few families of each nation (often the leading families- might be why they were made leaders because their family had this miracle in it), but we have no evidence if they are just resistant to higher powers birth control, if they possess some sort of innate fertility that the rest of the population never had, or if the 'children' are even the biological offspring of the parents and not the newest homin version created by karavan experiments.

An OOC explanation is that kara/kami implant fetuses into hominas. In character this could be viewed like a stork delivering a baby, or Yber in the case of Atys...

There are lots of instances of children both as NPCs and in RP amongst players. Still Wyler had a daughter and he was no special homin, but just a wild and crazy Tryker.

Almost all children are raised in creches and other closed and safe places until they are ready to enter the world. Only the children of royalty are shown before then. ((Note: this is not Lore, this is my personal explanation of the fact that there obviously *are* children and they aren't visible in general. It's a simpler explanation than Kami implantation of fetuses.))

I am the son of some homin and homina, I simply do not know who they were. I only remember my foster father.

I am a bit of a "numbers" person, so to me things need to click sometimes more than for others.

I do not wish to create discord or to be obdurate.

Nudge -- I appreciate that, and I don't think you have caused discord. Sometimes people want to debate, and it's not because they're mad, but because they like the intellectual stimulation.

I, too am a numbers person when something catches my interest.
