In the old boards there existed a sticky where players could post why they choose their cult alliance. I thought it would be nice to resurrect the threads. The purpose of the thread was that it was a useful source of information for new players, and it helped to clarify the political views of some of the players in game. Basically a character introduction thread categorized by character’s fame bearing. My suggestion is to start new threads in the roleplay board, and instead of naming these threads; why I choose [blank]; we can name them:

[OOC] Karavan Characters: Introduce your character.
[OOC] Kami Characters: Introduce your character.
[OOC] Neutral Characters: Introduce your character.
[OOC] Marauder Characters: Introduce your character.

Good idea Sueky - anything which clarifies the reasoning bend the choice of allegiance can only be a good thing. My own choice in this matter changed radically when I first got to the Mainland and I properly understood the implications.

Hoping we don't get a lot of those 'I chose kara because kami suck' posts. I've seen enough of them.

I like this idea. It's always interesting to have these debates, as long as it doesn't boil down to a discussion of who sucks more.

We would have to follow the same instructions as posted by Soulsnatcher, "...try and keep the comments and posts in these constructive and at the least non abusive."

#5 Melden | Zitieren[en]

If these are *statements* of why a character is aligned a certain way, then why are comments about that statement warranted at all?

I don’t think it was meant to demand anyone from stating their character’s personal views on why they choose whatever side, and Soulsnatcher’s statement was a moderators warning to not turn the threads into a flame war and into something personal, which I think happened back then because the war was fresh and a big turnover in game, and we all know how passionate Ryzom players are. At least that’s what I understood.

If you see the link, and read the old boards, you will see that players posted their character’s political ideas and how their journey and time on Atys shaped their characters. Some talked about changing sides, others reflected on their experience in the temple wars, and a few stated why they are neutral but yet cult aligned for teleports, it was a very interesting read. Most of those players have moved on, I think.

We are living in post-temple-war era, different times on Atys. Continuing the theme of posting why we choose a side in our time is a good way to help new players understand the current fame set up, as well as shed some light on history and lore they may not understand. This is intended to be helpful, fun roleplay, and not a means to start flaming wars or stir unnecessary forum conflict.

It shouldn’t be too hard to post a character bio, if we want to call it that, so that the community can learn about other players’ point of view directly from the players themselves. If there is a need for drama, then it should be in-game, in roleplay, in live action where it counts and far more interesting than bickering on the forums. I see many players posting stories and journals, all great ideas, so why not a thread for our character’s profile is what I’m getting at. Call me a romantic and old school if you will but I think it’s a good idea.

Of course the reason for the poll and the topic is to have the discussion where everyone can have a say and help improve the idea. How should we start it, tossing around questions for players to answer? Personally I prefer allowing free range and letting players write in their own words how they view Atys, play their characters, and intend to roleplay them even if they are not roleplayers., than answering questions. I think Introduce your Character is broad enough.

Sorry, I think you misunderstood my intent.

I agree with the idea of character statements of why they have taken the stance they have. I don't think other players commenting on those statements is very helpful as comments *about such statements* would tend to devolve into flaming.

@Gorran

You are right, I misunderstood your point. Apologies. You mean players commenting on posted character intorduction threads with an intent to flame or instigate a player for the choice they've made - I agree with you, it can happen. We can make a statement to keep the board for the posting of character introductions, and that comments are not necesary. Moderators have been quick to notice such behaviors on the forum and they are not shy to take actions. And we can only rely on the community that is active on the forum to help police the forums from trolls and flaming.

You can already create character information in your profile, which people can read by right clicking on your toon.
Would be more useful within the forums if it could be accessed from there as well (afaik at the moment it can't), and as people can't comment on it you avoid the inevitable flaming that WILL occur otherwise.

Of course very few people take the time to fill out that information.

Great idea. The original thread was intresting because many of us had started Ryzom when cult allegiances were unimportant to gameplay(no outposts, all teleports available no matter your fame). Now it would be an intresting insight into how players making a choice that impacts their gameplay decide.

Ballistic Mystix moved to Atys after the hated EA killed our beloved Earth and Beyond. Our GL Rakujitsu,Oshido and Soma planted our flag firmly in Tryker. I soon followed and loved the early halcyon days on Atys. All was new everyone was small and hominkind supported each other to salvage our culture from the the destruction wrought from the kitin. As faction loomed on the horizon Ballistic Mystix and our dearest friends and allies formed the nuetral HOPE Alliance. It's goals were to maintain the early feeling of community we enjoyed at launch. It was a noble ideal which as time progressed became increasingly impractical to maintain. We as a guild decided to follow the "Karavan for tps" approach. As time progressed Rak,Osh and Soma moved on and I became GL.Events on Atys finally determined that we as a guild must commit to a side. At the time the Kami were dominate and we decided that as Trykers and with a background in EnB a futuristic tech based game that the Karavan best fit our ideals. For me personally I never saw a Karavan harm a homin but had witnessed and experienced being killed digging with low Kami Tolerance. The Karavan saved us and never harmed us so I follow them.-Kil

I figured I'd paste in my original post from the Why I chose Karavan thread

I'm aware of the feature and I like that we have it. Like Gorran stated character profiles can be seen by clicking players name on the forums as well, another great feature. I've not filled mine because I've yet to figure out what path my character is going to take, and for the moment my focus has been more toward skills and game mechanics. Reading the old board I'm discovering who she is and where history can influence the homin she can become. So, I will have one ready by the time the boards are added.

Adding the threads I'm suggesting is also a great way for new players that seek information about the options available and how players play their characters in game. Kilgoretrout's post for example; he talks about the early life on Atys long before choosing a faction became law. The very information I read in the old boards that gave me a new perspective of Atys.

After reading those boards I understood players do impact the game, Atys does change. Some players might not understand we are playing in a world that is alive. I've not play in any MMO that gives me this feeling of knowing that at any moment the world I play in can change and impact my character's life. The decision is ultimately mine weather to stay aligned-neutral or unaligned-neutral and live with the restrictions.

What I would like to discuss more on this thread is the concern people have about the threads becoming a means to flame players for the choices they've made. If we can organize ourselves to have a representative of each alignment to start and police a board we can help monitor the posts. I think we can all agree that we want the threads to be only for posting character history/profiles, one post per character and comments are not required. We can also inform the forum moderators of what we want and they'll help.
