We must be able to dispose of unattended fires easily.

Then it sounds like the long-term solution that I proposed is the way to go. Fires are indestructible as long as the creator is present, to indicate the fire being taken care of. When the creator is gone, fire begins to die; its lifespan depends on the quality of materials used. Ensure that a walkable path surrounds the fire to avoid using them to trap people.

This wold solve everyone's problems ... unless anyone's true purpose is to cause drama and grief.

My real name is not Firemin. This is just my "codename" if you will, in the crusade for fire safety. I prefer not to divulge my real name because there are some pyromaniacs loose in Fairhaven who could do bad things to me if they knew my name or address.

Nope. My only alt is Zwiffer and he is mute and will not post his feelings on these things.

I don't play like that and never will.

Ok then, have to give it to me the day you start an anti fire  guild i found it strange you already found a homin strongly against fire on the mainland with the name FireMin(ion)

This is getting a tad too far. It is an RPG, not a place to argue about campfires! I like the idea of having them here in game because it creates a stronger atmosphere. If we make the campfires non-attackable by players and guards, that would make things a bit better. To make things great, you can add a timer so they go away when that player logs off, but to make sure they didn't disconnect, make them pop 5 minutes after log. If this is not enough, put a limit on how many can be on a region at once. There are many possibliities to fixing this problem, the matter is just trying to find the right one that works with everyone.

Might I just say, I find the IC battle over the fires hilarious and actually a great iniative of player-driven politics/events, but it worries me that some seem to have difficulty keeping IC and OOC apart, which brings the risk that a pretend-conflict for entertainment purposes turns into a real conflict between players.

IC comments do not belong in this thread or even this forum - it's for OOC discussion about how game mechanics should work, which is a different discussion than the IC one about 'fire safety'. I would guess that this is also why several posts that seemed to be RPing were removed from this thread. Please keep them coming, as they are awesome, but do keep them in the appropriate forums to avoid confusion.

Something else has been bugging me, and it fits with a change to the fires, should something ever materialize.

Once the fires are made indestructible in the presence of their creator and die a slow death when not, the only way to put them out prematurely should have a cost. Just as there is a cost to creating them, there should be a cost to extinguish them. Because the fires actually have a use in occupations, the cost to extinguish them should also come from the occupations.

So I propose that to extinguish an unattended fire, one must use water from the Water Carrier occupation. Water, when in the presence of a fire, shall have an additional option: Extinguish campfire. This will consume the water and extinguish the fire causing it to disappear within seconds.

If the would-be extinguisher chooses not to use water to extinguish the fire, that is a viable option. The fire will eventually burn itself out and disappear in due time.

that doesn't sound so stupid and could be used for rping i guess since the firemen would atleast have to do a quest to extinguis the fire giving them a task to do at first what would cost them some time to do, right now it really feels like griefing ppl don't kill packers left behind either (i know the cost of a fire and a packer is alot higher but for rich ppl buying mats for fire or a packer is just the same they have enough of them)

+1 to Firemin (and womin) being required to be Water Carriers and use Water Carrier crafts to extinguish campfires.

Remember, only you can prevent Flaming Forests....

+1

Though I would additionally propose not requiring the creator to be absent, and giving the creator the option to extinguish without water.
