I have been playing for three days and I want to say that I enjoy Ryzom very much especially being a fan of skill-based character progression, sandbox play, and deep crafting.

The one aspect of the game I do not enjoy is combat and this for a minor yet aggravating reason: rapid corpse decay + no auto-loot. Corpses decay so quickly one has to loot between every mob or risk losing spoils. This throws combat pacing off so instead of it being visceral and fun it is a halting repetition of:

Swing, swing, kill mob, wait, wait, wait, wait, doubleclick corpse, select loot all, target
next mob.

The waiting is because there is 2-3 second delay before a corpse switches from attackable to lootable. There are more loot mechanics involved in combat than actual combat. A super simple solution is to slow the corpse decay timer so that someone can have fun fighting for a while and then do a quick round of looting. An even better solution would be like Tabula Rasa, where one merely ran over corpses to loot them.

Are you on Silan still? The silan mobs disappear much faster at the loot period than they do on the mainland I believe or that is what I have experienced. On the mainland you can kill a couple depending on how fast you do it then loot without losing any looting chances. The exception is of course when tehre is nothing to loot.

I am still on Silan. But even if the loot decays after two mobs, those two mobs have to be close together otherwise, you might as well stay at the first and loot it before moving, otherwise you're ping ponging yourself for not much gain--and it's still interruptive. You can't get into a combat groove because it's a few swings and stopping to loot.

I believe Meagon is correct, Silan corpses disappear much quicker than mainland. Most likely so the group can respawn quicker so more players can get a turn at them for quests/grinding. But seeing as this isn't really a problem anymore with the smaller population, maybe they could fix it to make it less frustrating for new players.

On the mainland you can wipe out a whole spawn before the corpses disappear.

Thanks for the replies folks. I just wanted to bring this issue up because if Ryzom is trying to attract new players the game should really be putting its best foot forward on newbie island. If aspects of the tutorial are frustrating there a good chance people won't stick around to see that it gets better. If my impression is not shared by others, then there is no problem. But if my frustration is valid then it is probably worth it to try and resolve the issue.
