IDEAS FOR RYZOM

I think this discussion is missing a number of points.

a) The game world has its own private rules. Most importantly, while parts of this world map to real-world rulesets/objects/ideas/constructs, no game world can or will map to all things you or me will consider relevant. The possibility of expression is drastically limited in a game world.

Consider: politics in gameplay are ridiculously simplified, most of it happens via roleplay. Religion is simplified in gameplay, yet story arcs do touch on religion. And so on and so forth, the actual game mechanics/objects are quite sparse, if we were to jot down a list.

if we open the can of worms called "ways the game is not inclusive", we could name racism (actually in-lore there is a lot of actual racism!), ableism (don't look at the lore for the Momos), classism (the stratified nature of Matis society, slavery in lakelands etc).

a.1.) Side-point, and food for thought: homins are clearly a primitive society, with far less refinement in thoughts. It could get interesting trying to explain non-binary gender to a primitive mind, even if it's sapient.

b) If something can be done in a moderate amount of time to include something that expands the options for players, I can support that. Armors is a difficult endeavour, but perhaps tattoos and haircuts would be easier? Then, sure.

b.1.) Btw - I fully agree that the female medium armors are literally „fan service”, or pandering, or what's the right term for it! And I say it as a guy playing a female character.

c) For you, I believe it would be far easier to introduce your identity via role-play. There are opportunities, from posts in the RP section of the forum, to being open about it when chatting to players. Your mileage may vary.

Good luck :)

I agree with all that actually. Actually my posterchild for racism in Ryzom has to be the existence of "primitive versions" of homins and Cutes especially (which look to me like a racist depiction of indigenous people), made worse by the fact that the whitest homin race (matis) doesn't have one.

That said, I do think allowing adjusting skin tone on characters would be a great idea. That might be one of the easier improvements to make to character customization incidentally (probably just a matter of recoloring textures).

Side-point, and food for thought: homins are clearly a primitive society, with far less refinement in thoughts. It could get interesting trying to explain non-binary gender to a primitive mind, even if it's sapient.

Well there are many historical examples of societies that have more than just two genders. I mentioned the hijra community earlier, which as I understand it has been around for hundreds of years.

If something can be done in a moderate amount of time to include something that expands the options for players, I can support that. Armors is a difficult endeavour, but perhaps tattoos and haircuts would be easier? Then, sure.

That makes sense, yes. And while it wouldn't do much about the lingerie armor thing for me, it'd still be a nice expansion to variety. :)

Yes, being open about it when chatting is the route I'm going. Thanks for the support! :)

For the record, Matis have primitive ancestors. They are not in-game because (most likely) none remains. They have been exterminated by the Matis themselves.

Interestingly, the myth of the primitive/primitive thought arose, in part, from the peoples assigned to these mythic categories not recognizing the Cartesian duality at the heart of the western thought, especially the biomedical model.
