IDEAS FOR RYZOM

Lore is the pillar the sandbox built on... :)

This leads nowhere. I simply and strongly prefer lore over non-lore expansions comming into the game.

I'm with Magez. Lore is good to have, but being slavishly close to it eliminates much (if not all) of the freedom that defines a sandbox, and (for me) reduces the appeal of Ryzom. I also think that the "lore slave versus freeform" debate is causing a lot of friction on Atys. We're seeing a little bit of that here in this thread; a split between the RPG and RPG camps.

My take is that Atys is a world, worlds are supposed to be dynamic, being dynamic means change, and change means that things won't always be the way they were in the past. Conversely, most interpretations of "lore friendly" I've seen are all about repeating the past "faithfully", being afraid of (if not outright hostile to) change, resisting anything dynamic enough to make an interesting world, and just generally a total buzzkill.

I think the matter should be decided by what is better for the game as a whole rather than what is most lore-friendly; we should respect the lore, but not remain such slaves to it that the game stagnates to satisfy the hidebound. One side or the other will be unhappy no matter which way it goes, but I'd rather the side that represents the majority of Atysian residents get their way than have it decided solely by how closely an idea adheres to the "correct", strict, fundamentalist interpretation of "holy" scripture.

As for whether this particular idea is good or bad, the devil is in the details. I don't oppose it on general principle, and am somewhat intrigued, but I'd want the idea fleshed out a little more before I actually supported it.

Then Ryzom is not a sandbox but a Lore based game.

That's opinion. Would you be willing to have the server shut down over it when the divide between those who share your view and those who don't becomes untenable? Would you rather have Atys disappear than share the rootball with those of us who see lore as a tool rather than a weapon?

I seem to recall some people opposing making Marauders a playable faction, but lore has expanded to give Marauder players a camp and a new TP system. Despite my opinions of particular individual Marauders (those who twist lore to "justify" violating the CoC), I feel that going against the wishes of the purists and making Marauders playable has been an overall benefit to the game.

Evolve. Adapt. Accept that lore is not static, and Atys shouldn't be either.

Exactly. Sadly, too many are such slaves to the lore that they will mansplain to the devs the way I've seen people try telling JK Rowling about Harry Potter, which causes damage to the community.

But back on topic; if a change can be executed well, the lore can be expanded/evolved to accommodate, so lore-friendliness is a poor excuse to shoot a proposal down. It may be a valid criticism of the execution of the idea, but not of the idea itself.

The takeaway for me that I get from most of these threads ... "if it's not what i want, then i don't want it in game".  I have a BBQ, I make 6 different meats and / or Seafood, 5 of 6 different salads and miscellaneous appetizers ... take what ya want and leave the reast for others.   What I see not specifically here in this thread, but in most threads is, I don't like Potato Salad and i won't go to a BBQ that serves it.  If it's there and ya don't eat it, pass by and take what bya bdo like ..... no "skin off your nose" if there's option that you don't like and others do.... no one is stopping you from getting what you want.

Let's talk about say an apartment decoration... let's say you do a mektoub relay race with a team of 8 homins, 1 doing each region and you win a set of 8 statuette of a particular Atys creature to stick on a shelf in your apartment and they are randomly distrubured to each team member.  You like races, you had fun, you invested 2 hours in it ... you got a reward.  Great, why the hate on someone else find a different path to get same or similar rewrad.

Now here's the part I don't get ... if there is an alternative path to get that same or similar reward ... one that takes the same time investment , "where's the beef ?".  I like to do certain things, each person likes to do what they like ... why not be all inclusive and let everyone have a shot at statuettes for their apartment ?  Even if these alternate paths require larger time investments, most folks are against it.
