I thought about some small and fun projects and one of them was a new web app to create visual novels and of course read the work of others. Do you think this is something players would use?

Short example:

[Scene 1]
(Picture of a Kipee)
You stand before the Kipee. The Kipee roars!

a) Slay the mighty Kipee [Scene 2]
b) Run away! [Scene 3]

[Scene 2]
(Picture of failure)
You try to hit the Kipee, but the Kipee hits you instead! Game Over.

[Scene 3]
(Picture of yubo)
You run like a yubo smelling food. You escape the Kipee. Your adventure continues!

Yes :D
+1

I even liked R.O.X. the way it was some time ago, apart from the navigation and the lack of stories back then (as far as I remember). I just noticed you updated it :)

I would suggest a "Scream and die" option rather than a merely "Kipee hits you instead!" option.

I need me a new tag line on my messages!

I like the idea! It seems like it could be a lot of fun.

It's hard to scream when you are stunned ;)

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.

OK, but it sounds alot better than "grunts and dies", "Whimpers and dies", or "Moans and dies"!

Should it use items? For example you have one path which leads to a locked door, but you need a key to open it. You go back 2 scenes and open something to find a key.

This would change it from a visual novel to a click and point adventure without the click and point... or something.

Could make it optional maybe? It sounds definitely interesting.

Absolutely! I wanted to do a dungeon crawl where (for example) you need a key to access a certain room. It can still be done without memory/items/inventory using 2 different pages (the same room but one where you have the key and one where you don't) but this would have an upper bound of 2 to the power of N pages.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! A very early prototype can already be tested with /appzone 2126 or by adding the "story (beta)" app from the app zone.

I will look into the item mechanic and try to come up with something.

We already have some short stories online! Thanks to everyone, who helped testing! I think the app is definitely a go. No pictures or items for now, but some classic storytelling instead.

Stay tuned for more!

Do you think some really basic mini games would benefit this? I thought about games like myst and others, where you have to pass a challenge presented in numeric or other puzzles to the player. If so, what kind of basic games could I add?

I'm not yet sold on the minigames, but I believe items are a must now. Of course you are free to make a story without any items used aswell.

Work on the Story app continues slowly, I think an option to export your story might be a nice touch aswell. It could generate a html document so you don't have to copy and paste every single chapter out of the app and can just save this as a "backup"?

With the scenario editor slowly picking up, do you think a text only based app is still useful? I would like to add items to the Story app just to play around with it, but I think once the Ryzom Ring is more or less back in place, my app will kinda become obsolete.

So far only one story has been published and the discussion in this thread and over at the Story app thread has stopped aswell.

I have several other projects to work on, unless the Story app becomes really popular over night, I will focus more on the other projects from now on.

I think the scenrio editor is still tricky enough to use that the story app has use, at least for the time being.

Atys has been slow across the board lately. Maybe it's that school started for the year, maybe it's RL things like hurricanes, but regardless, there has been an across-the-board slowdown.
