I have heard (actually read) the term a few times, but i have no idea what an "alt" is. Could someone illuminate me concerning this term?

Please?

Its a second, ALTernate toon/character/avatar.

Some alts live dreary lives as near slaves, forced to do little more than care-plan for their cruel taskmaster Mains, or endlessly do occupations merely to line the pockets of their miserly overlords.

Others, live much more free lives, and some even gain the status of "pretty-much-a-second-main".

They are not always made on the spare slots of a single account, and can be second accounts entirely.

So, in other words, I am an alt of my primary character.

Crap!

Being an alt isn't all that bad, at least not for me. Sure, it sometimes gets a little boring sitting there waiting with a Heal spell as Gidget digs for toxic gas in Loria, but there are times where she makes a huge pile of Rifle ammo and lets me run around shooting Cloppers, and she did get me a nice set of Cukoo jewels for my birthday.

But yes, there are some Homins who aren't so nice to their alts.

They are often but not always used from a separate account. This allows you to play them at same time with another PC or a virtual PC.

or like me you can have them all run from separate copies of the original install (can be a space hog if you have many of them, although there are ways around this as well {at least on windows pc's})

or you can use the same single install, and simply log in each different account 1 at a time (keep in mind that if you want to have custom layouts and what not that can create issues with a single install method {which is why i have so many installs, so each can be set up the way i want without the need to change things everytime i log in an alt})

just a little info on the subject of alts.

Tip - if yourun multiple clients fron one PC, then you need something like Process lasso or WinAFC to set the affinities.

Most computers these days have multi-core CPUs, but if you don't set the affinities, there is a good chance that you wil try running both/all clients on one core, which really creates a slowdown.

that's another reason i have more then one copy of ryzom on my pc, i use a program called "bill2's process manager" and you set it once and forget it. when the programs you listed failed to produce the proper results for me (i tried both) i found "bill2's" and after just a few minutes it was set and i've not had to touch it again (unless i added a new alt/instal), that was roughly about a year ago.

if you use a single install and bill2's program i'd advise you to set that exe to run on all cores your cpu offers. bill2's uses the exact exe file AND path to set affinities, which makes setting the same exe and path to different cores hard if not impossible. personally i didn't play with the settings enough to say for sure, and i already had multi-installs because of the user interface settings i spoke of previously in this thread so for me it was very simple to set up and i didn't have to figure it out.

i love that this topic is so active, let's keep it going :)

I also run two separate installs as opposed to two instances of the same; I have a 2TB drive that is less than half full, so storage isn't really a concern for me. I never heard of Bill2's, but that may be because I set Google to filter out pages in languages I can't read, which is pretty much everything other than English. Now that I know of it, I'll give it a try. I will say that WinAFC was a hassle. It worked well, but was a real pian to set up.

it's english gidget, just google it "bill2's process manager" it's free, small and is fairly easy for anyone that's used the default task manager in windows (setting up rules is as easy as run the client, open bill2's and create a rule)

EDIT:
use the majorgeeks.com results for a fully english page (the offical page has all the various languages mixed on the same lines and can be a pain (it's orginally french, but had a good translation team, it covers all the major languages of ryzom)

I found it alright, though I STRONGLY prefer getting my stuff straight from the devs instead of via some third party, and tend to cruise the site before downloading a single byte. That meant surfing their site via Google Translate.

So far, it's done a lot of things I don't want, not always done what I do want, and about four seconds away from being uninstalled as I return to Process Lasso. Still, it's a case of YMMV, and you'll never know what works best if you don't try a bunch of different things.

Personally I just fire up the Task Manager built-in in Windows, and it can set process affinity just fine. Might need administrator rights, which I expect you have on your machine. The linux builds don't need any special tweaks, as far as I know.

Gidget: Jotti's Malware Scan can help you scan any executable up to 20mb in size. I haven't used an antivirus in years, partially thanks to this website.

With Win7 I did not find a way to use the Task Manager to assign core affinities without totally disabling the UAC, something I was unwilling to do. That's why I use WinAFC.

That doesn't work for all processes, Ryzom beoing one of them, and of those that will allow it, it must be done at every startup. Rather inconvenient.
