Mac'Od Bittty sits at his desk with a fresh sheet of parchment and dips his pen in freshly made ink.

Harvestor 8, 4th AC 2581

To Wuaoi Yai-Zhio, Ranger Instructor
Lordoy!

I take quill in hand to report disturbing developments in the Verdant Forest. Some of this I have observed with my own eyes and the rest is by report of Ser Gillest, Bones, Ranger Aspirant Meggy and others. I send this to you to forward to Orphie Dradius. You may be sure that I will encourage all homins to observe and report.

As you may be aware, the Matis Noble Ozwomen organized a second expedition to the Tunnel of Woe and that this expedition sparked a swarm of Kitins that attacked Yrkanis. That attack was beaten off, but swarms of Incensed Kinchers and Lacerating Kirostas still occupy the area in Knoll of Dissent.

Observations were made of a large number of the Kirostas in the area north and west of the Tunnel, in the region of Dryland Gate Stronghold, as well as an immense swarm of them near the eastern end of the Tunnel just west of Runninghill Research Center. That group is focused right at the site of the destroyed kitin Mound. East of Runninghill to the north of the pass there is a widely spread group of Incensed Kinchers. There is also a tightly packed group of Kinchers at the top of the mound over the Tunnel and another spread out group of Kinchers north of the Tunnel and another such group south of the Tunnel near the Karavan altar and Wooky Workshop.

I heard reports of other Kirostas and Kinchers near the camp of the Matisian Border Guards, but did not confirm them prior to writing this message.

What worries me is that they are displaying behavior similar to that observed in the time after the Second Swarming. They are generally not aggressive until they are either attacked or one of their number (whom I would call a "spotter") notices a homin. Once that occurs, they appear to attack in groups of six. The end of that behavior was the emergence of the gigantic Excavator kitins.

In addition, any attack by a homin against other beasts in the area appears to attract the aggressive attention of the kitins. This is a new behavior; I have never seen kitins defend other beasts. Gillest reported that even healing another homin would start an attack, but Bones and I tested this several times to no result. Perhaps he simply had bad luck with the "spotter" kitins.

If individual kirostas are taunted sufficiently far away from their clutch-mates (>100m), then they can be killed without any more danger than usual. This seems to be the case with the Kinchers as well, though it was much more difficult due to their being widespread.

That is my report so far.

Mac'Od Bittty Ranger Aspirant

P.S. Several people seem to have blamed this incursion on the Rangers for some reason. Given that the expedition was organized by a Matis and accompanied by a madwoman who was Fyros, I don't understand.

Bittty waits for the ink to dry, then attaches the message to a well-fed Izam and sends it off.

Mac'Od Bittty strips off his armor and puts on simple clothes. It has been a long and sweaty patrol with far more running than fighting. Soon he will go for a cleansing swim in his beloved lakes, but now he must write again. At least this time the note will be shorter. He trims the quill and moistens the ink.

To Wuaoi Yai-Zhio, to forward to Orphie Dradius:
Harvestor 20, 4th AC, 2581
Lordoy!

I have patrolled the entire region surrounding the Tunnel of Woe during the last week. In addition to the concentrations of kitins noted in my previous messsage I would add an open formation group of Kirostas along the road just east of the camp of the First Deserters tribe (number: four to five clutches of six), another open group near and south of the Runninghill Border Post, extending past the Border Raiders Camp (numbering at least 4-5 clutches). Of kinchers I found an open group in and in the heights above Runninghill Pass (one or two clutches) and another open group north and east of Runninghill Research Center extending to the western end of Torbak Hill Trail (3-4 clutches).

I have found no groups of either Kinchers or Kirostas beyond the normal population of the region east of a line running through the Matisian Border Guards camp. Access to the Grove is achievable with only the normal obstacles.

Returning to the west of the Tunnel I ascended the ramp and found no additional kitins in Hidden Source. Looking over the region from the heights I estimate 8-10 clutches of Kirostas and 1-2 of Kinchers in the region to the north and west of the tunnel.

Investigation of behavior: Previous report of kitins defending local wildlife seem to have been false. Tested several times with no reaction. My previous report of "spotter" kitins seems to be reasonable. I was chased three times during the patrol after passing numerous kinchers and kirostas without incident.

Ranger Aspirants are looking for guidance on this matter, please advise.

Mac'Od Bittty Ranger Aspirant.

The izam seems to be eager to begin its journey as Bittty attaches the message to its leg.

Rapport d'observation, Dua, Pluvia 14, 4e CA 2581

Mystia 11, 4th AC 2582 (Feb. 8th) events:

While Naema was resting in bed after suffering a concussion from the coma she recieved fighting kitins today, she decided to compose a letter to Orphie Dradius as her duty as a Ranger Aspirant:

After observing a Giant Rotoa in Egg room in Kitins Lair, well, to the degree she could, seems she is needing glasses now as she had a hard time 'seeing' the giant flower, when a haunting message echoed through the corridors,..."Matisian border gaurds have reported a large group of kitins on the way to Yrkanis...". Immediately as a Matisian I felt my heart sink!
I left the observations in the Kitins Lair by teleporting out and helped many homins fight off the kitins before they entered Yrkanis. Suprisingly, even those who would love to see Yrkanis burned to the ground helped out, perhaps thinking that if they didn't, then the next invasion may be their own homeland.
Thankfully, the Kitins were pushed back to the Tunnel of Woe. Although many thought that was enough, some, including myself grew tired of the Kitins invasion of my homeland and persued the kitins into the tunnel to try to wipe them out. Although the shock of so many homins sent the Kitins reeling, we persued them 3/4 of the way into the tunnel where eventually they put me into a coma and only by the powers that be, I was allowed to respawn to a safe location. To my knowledge, the kitins suffered a setback today. Lets hope it is a long time before they try to invade again.
Yours Truely,
~Naema

P.S. A quick edit already: After a return to the Kitins Lair to observe the rotoa and to dig some larvae for scrolls, I noticed something that escaped my notice: there is at least 1 terminator kipee in the egg room now. Some have suggested maybe the kipees are taking care of the rotoa, or even irritated by it, but I never noticed a terminator Kipee in the KL before.

Daomei decides to write a short report about the recent events in Kitin Lair and the Verdant Heights, and her and Diwu's findings on patrol

Dear Wuaoi, Dear commander Orphie,

Having patrolled the Tunnel of Woe region together with Diwu ever since having taken part in the second expedition of the Matis, I did not deem it necessary to waste your time with a report which would have been largely identicall with Mac'Od Bittty's careful observations. I only want to add that the Kinchers south of the tunnel near Wooky Workshop seem even less aggressive in the moment than the Kirosta; they seem to operate in groups of 3 only.

Just recently, Diwu and me, together with several other Ranger aspirants, accompagnied a group of Matis and other homins under lead of the royal botanist Ser Cuiccio Perinia and Ser Zakk, who wanted to inspect the large and strange Rotoa which has grown in the rear of the middle tunnel of prime egg chamber in the Kitin Lair. That plant has grown at the place where we recognized a strange mound of soil blocking the passage in the last section of the middle passage. It is a large plant with bright blue, nearly white, monocoloured bloom. It has grown fairly fast, ways quicker than normal rotoa plants.

We reached the place without incidents. The homins, especially the Matis, expressed their admiration of that natural wonder and admired the beauty of the plant. Especially Ser Curinia was enthusiastic and eager to harvest seeds of the plant as soon as they be available. Several Matis presumed that this plant might be the work of Ser Almati - some even asked if Almati could still be alive to which Ser Perinia contradicted, but he, too, was convinced that this plant was no chance of nature but the work of a Matis genius (personally, I deem all that somewhat speculative, yet we shall go on inquiring and shall see in the end).

Several times, fights erupted with the kipee patrol in the prime egg chamber. To my impression, there were less kipees than usually, and they were not aggressive when we arrived. I am not sure whether it were the kipees who started the fights or rather some reckless or intimidated homin in the large crowd. Anyway, they were disposed of soon any time.

After having observed and discussed for some time, a message came in that the Matisian Border Guard tribe had sighted a large mass of Kitins crossing the border to Majestic Garden and heading towards Yrkanis. We all used our pacts for Yrkanis and prepared for defence. The attack was much similar to the first attack after the expedition into Tunnel of Woe. Crowds of lacerating kirosta and incensed kinchers tried to storm towards Yrkanis but stood no chance. The defending force pressed forward north, destroying every incoming wave of kitins without major troubles. Finally, the homins proceeded towards Tunnel of Woe destroying any kitins in their way, even the two large crowds of kinchers and kirostas at the two eastern tunnel entries. An attack into the tunnel was considered, but given up *) as the number of homins had decreased somewhat and the large kitin forces began to be replenished ((respawned)). So the attack subsided in skirmishes, and Diwu and me decided to return to Pyr.

best regards, Daomei
Ranger aspirant

Daomei adds a short note
*) Later I heard that a part of the homin force had pressed into the tunnels but had to resort to resurrection by the powers when getting overwhelmed.

Nair-Orphie, Nair-Wuaoi,

Dear Wuaoi, Dear commander Orphie,

Mac'Od Bittty sits at a table in Liffan's bar in Fairhaven with a stiff drink of stinga rum in front of him. The spring air is warm but he still feels as if a chill is running through his bones. He pulls out pen and ink and scribes in a crude but readable hand.

To Orphie Dradius, Commander of Rangers
Lordoy!

I have just returned from an inspection of the are around the Tunnel of Woe. Contrary to the proud declarations of the Matis, the defense of Yrkanis most recent has not resulted in the return of the status quo. The area around the tunnel is swarming with Lacerating Kirostas and Incensed Kinchers. They are still not highly aggressive, but seem to have more of the "spotter" kitins this time than in my previous encounters. (Or perhaps I just had bad luck.) The crowd of Kinchers atop the hill over the nest is about the same as it was in my last letter. The groups to the south and north and west are all smaller than I had previously observed, but there was a great mass of mixed kinchers and kirostas at the south entrance of the Tunnel all of them moving back and forth with a deal of speed, and apparently moving to fill the valley near where the Mound used to be.

A kincher chased me to the east, so I went to visit the Matisian Border Guards, whose camp was on full alert. As I looked to the south and west, I noted that the mass of kitins was once again assembled in that region, but that instead of being mostly Lacerating Kirostas it was a mix of Kirostas and Kinchers. When I approached, it became obvious that they were not the same sorts as near the Tunnel. The entire assembly of 80 or more kitins were Great Kirostas and Great Kinchers !!! As with the other gatherings they seemed to be biding their time.

Even more worrisome was my observation of a line of Karavan hovering observation modules (such as are seen over the camps of those tribes the Karavan favor). This line extended from cliff to cliff at the border of Knoll of Dissent and Majestic Garden. If the Karavan are ready to deploy their technology, I worry that these gatherings of Kitins portend more than the usual reaction of the kitins to attacks in force by homins. I pulled one of the Great Kirostas close to the line, but did not observe any change.

I intend to post a notice warning of the increased danger.

By my hand this 26th Germinally, 1st AC, 2582

Mac'Od Bittty

Bittty carefully rolls and ties the letter and attaches it to the leg of a willing Izam. Then he orders another stinga rum.

The following notice is posted in the cities of the Verdant Forest and of the other Nations as well. It is copied in a fair hand.

WARNING to all homins traveling in or near the Knoll of Dissent.

Kitins are again swarming around the Tunnel of Woe and congregating at the border between Knoll of Dissent and Majestic Garden. This swarming is similar to those observed in the last Cycle, except that the assembly near the border is now made of Kinchers and Kirostas of the highest rank, Great Kinchers and Great Kirostas.

Karavan devices have been sighted along the border, hovering observation devices such as found above tribes favored by the Karavan. Their purpose is unknown.

In the service of hominity.

While recovering nicely, I chose to compose another letter to Orphie Dradius:

Dear Orphie Dradius,

In previous statements by you, i recall you mentioned we as Rangers can defend our home against invaders, this was of course refering to when other factions/guilds attacked our Outposts, however, as a Matis interested in protecting the forest from invasions of Kitins I find this also applies in this case too.

Can we get clear instructions as Rangers on how we are to respond? I cannot sit Idly by and Just 'observe' the kitins, while being nice and hospitable to the Matis kingdom as they fight off the kitins. I must help them! If being a ranger involves just sitting back and observe while our home is run over by kitins, then I will resign as a ranger. I support the forest whole-heartedly and will not be governed by politics. It may sound rogue, but I don't care. If it involves driving the kitins back to pr, then so be it. I protect the forest and especially I protect the new homins who wish to explore it.

#12 [en]

(Continued):

My reason for asking for directions are that if in your proffessional opinion you thought attacking the kitins in the Tunnel of Woe will agitate them further, or discourage them from flooding our lovely forest?

Please respond, waiting for your instructions...
Yours truely,
~Naema

Daomei writes a letter to Wuaoi and Orphie

Dear Orphie, dear Wuaoi,

I hereby am sending my report for the upcoming Rangers' assembly. There are two topics:

1. Assembly in Pyr and a short summary about the "Atreus case".

To those not familiar with what ist called the Atreus affair, I recommend the report by Akenak Eeri Summary of the actions of Thesos patriots, and this Akenak assembly minutes by Akenak Lerya.

Atreus is the twin brother of the late sharükos Dexton. He was abducted as a newborn and raised in the belief that his family had expulsed him. He and some followers had undertaken efforts to overthrow sharükos Lykos - it is not clear how far these efforts have gone, but the conspirators, including Atreus, are awaiting a trial. Atreus is suffering from the same disease which threatened the life of Dexton (killed him in the memories of some homins) in the past.

With the help of many homins, an inquiry had been started to reveal the details of the abduction of Atreus before the first great swarming. The spiritus rector of that crime was an evil senator who bribed some of the guards and midwives. During the birth of the second twin a fire was started in the palace to distract sharükos Cerakos and a loyal guard, a dead baby boy (murdered short before) was foisted on sharükos Lydia to make her believe that her second son had died during birth. These circumstances have been revealed during the last session of the Akenak and the imperial court.

As shocking as these findings are, no dangers of civil war or further acts of high treason in the desert exist anymore. On behalf of the Rangers, I offered assistance if necessary to save the life of Atreus.

2. Some remarks upon the last Session of the circles in Zorai

Though I am not in charge for the Witherings anymore, I am still observing the course of events, there. What made me worry, was the harsh criticism of the inquiries and expeditions of the kingdom into the tunnel of woe kitin outpost, blaming the Matis for the subsequent kitin attacks by "poking their noses where they do not belong", as a Zorai awakened was not ashamed to enunciate.

I wondered a bit that none of the Ranger applicants an companions contradicted - at least such has not been reflected in the notes and minutes of the assembly. I want to describe my point of view concerning our conduct with kitins.

I am convinced that kitins are not just animals but an intelligent lifeform. Yet, until now, they have refused any contact or communication other than sheer violence. As long as this situation prevails we cannot but consider the kitins a profoundly hostile power which may attack anytime without warning or obvious reason.

Thus, our way of dealing with them must be to pay utter attention to all behavioral patterns of all kitins on and below the bark. This includes but is not limited to incursions into their fortified places anytime we choose so. Additionally, all means of research and inquiry have to be taken, be they military, scientific, forceful, peaceful, or stealthy. Every homin, no matter of which nation, race, or religion, has the right and the duty to take part in all enterprises of any of these kinds.

Unless the kitins start opening channels of communication and negotiation about mutual and peaceful access to their and our settlements, the right of every homin, including the clans of the marauders, to participate in actions concerning the kitins must not be abridged.

I would be grateful for a clarifying statement about these affairs. It might be communicated to the governments to avoid such misunderstandings. Ducking before the kitin danger will never save us.

Before the Rangers meeting, the ideas expressed by Daomei reached the ears of Zo'ro-Argh. He smiles ant thought:

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to see more intelligence we want to see in Kitins.

I am convinced that every living creature assaulted in what he considers his shelter defends fiercely. It would appear from what I understood of our history we have inadvertently threatened their privacy. Their hatred of hominkind seem logical.

From this perspective, and from a purely strategic aspect of the knowledge of his enemy, NASA collect any information that could contribute to help us to find the supposed serenity before the first swarm.
