I have paid New Horizons (NH) to transport me in the past, since I am not "well known" in the cities.

Question: How do I get transported for free? Is it based on Fame?

Fame or citizenship is the answer. If you are a citizen/vassal/etc. you can use your nation's NH for free.

If you have fame >= 45 you can use it for free as well. (I believe it's 45).

fame +45 in the land your trying to travel with NH in is all that's required to travel free :)

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.
