Hello trolls.
This post has an idea in it, hence it is situated in the ideas forum. It also has a rough guide which I believe some people really need to read.

Once again a form post of mine has been blocked off due to you. My next idea is very simple: If you don't have anything important to say, and can't find a nice way to say it, don't post.

I will make this very clear for some people who don't yet understand what will get a topic closed. Use of excessive language and an aggressive attitude. Write your post out then look back at it and decide if such a thing would warrant a topic being closed. Writing excessive posts (above 3) in an attempt to do nothing but pick holes in peoples posts without actually having a purpose to it. The whole point in making a post is to contribute, not an attempt to try and humiliate people.

EDIT: Also if you are joining a topic late maybe read through the whole thing? Otherwise you tend to make ignorant posts and ask questions when the answers are actually already in old posts.

Please have a read through and see what you are doing wrong. I think it is very clear the people in each case who have lead to the post being closed.

I'm not sure that this really belongs in the "Ideas for Ryzom" forum, since the idea that you suggest is one that cannot be implemented as an inherent part of the game. There's no way that a computer program on a server in France interacting with client programs all over the world can enforce rationality, civility, and the rules of civilized discourse.

I often disagree with suggestions that you post -- you and I have very different approaches to the game. However, in this case I can agree with you 100%.

While Bittty is technically right that it's not really an idea that can be implemented by the Devs, it IS an idea that can be implemented by the mods.

I agree totally with what Virg is saying here (and like Bittty i don't always); if you can't be constructive, respectful, accurate then don't post. I'd be in favour of forum bans for anyone authoring such poor posts.

I'd also add that if your main motivation for posting is to argue with/contradict the AUTHOR, rather than the content of the post, step back and think before you do. Don't just jump in and argue just because it's a particular person and you don't like them or their play styles.

When speaking of civility, not calling others trolls beforehand would be a good starting point.

Generally, when something went wrong, one might ask the following questions, exactly in that order:

- Did I do something wrong and can I avoid that in the future?

- Even if I did not, can I do something better avoiding confrontations and defusing tensions?

- Could others improve their behaviour?

- Did others something wrong?

Blame games do not help anybody.

Daomei I am tired and fed up of trolls consistently repeating the same thing over and over again. I call trolls exactly what they are.

I am not playing "the blame game". It should be clear to everyone who got those posts banned and if it isn't I am happy to explain it.

My first reaction when I read Virg's OP was to think "aren't you name calling?" but, on further reflection, I think that if you look at the examples he posted, they are the very definition of trolling - particularly the favourite's club ones.

IMO Virg has not called a specific person names, just asked people to stop acting like trolls, but as the old saying goes "if the cap fits..."

The first and most important thing when facing communication problems is to think about how to improve the situation. Voicing accusations and insults is seldom a way to do so.

"Troll" is an accusation, much more, it is an insult especially when thrown in against an unspecified multitude of participants in discussions. Under all circumstances, it is unlikely to defuse tensions or to bring heated controversies back to a civilized atmosphere.

I suggested that everybody should analyze her or his share of deteriorating debates. When I look into those you named (I took part in two of the three), I would not consider my own role as a flawless one at least in one of those two, and do not search excuses for, e.g. that I have repeatedly been abused and insulted in that discussion and a similar one, even by you to remind. I clearly could have acted in a more considerate fashion and will work hard do so in the future. Anyway I would consider it an insolence to call me a troll even in that discussion (the "bosses" one).

Others were at fault there, too, and possibly to a much larger extent. Most of them were no trolls, though, as a troll is somebody who intentionally sows discord in order to disrupt discussions. I fail to see that most of them had such an intention, and even the one who or two constantly taking pride in more or less "humorous" provocations and insults may not have had such in mind.

If you are tired of trolls, try to speak with those disrupting discussions, in your guild, in tell, where and how ever.

Btw., I consider the closing of the last thread not a result of trolling, but simply of that everything necessary was said, and even some unnecessary. So the thread could only deteriorate, and closing it was an act of quality assurance.

Daomei I am not accusing or insulting anyone. I am simply asking trolls to stop ruining topics that have been posted and in some cases getting them locked. I had a fair bit of time invested into discussing the points in my "ryzom favorites club" topic. It took a few minutes of trolling to completely destroy the whole thing.

You tell me to think about how to improve the situation? I did. I made this post. I asked trolls to stop destroying topics and steering them off-course.

You suggested(??) that everyone analzied their share? Daomei that is what I suggested at the beggining of this topic:

We clearly disagree on the reason why the last topic was closed. Yes communications were not good before but I believe with or without that the trolling was coming and that topic would have gotten closed.
