I started playing Ryzom on Windows XP several years ago. Now I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I believe Ryzom was definitely written to be an XP application.

In Windows 7 I have noticed that I am prompted every time I launch Ryzom to allow it to make changes to my system and I cannot pin it to my Start Menu. I either have to run the shortcut on my desktop or find it in my start menu. I also noticed that logs and screen shots are not written to the Windows User folder, but within the Program Files folder. Does anybody here play Ryzom on a Windows 8 machine? My laptop is a few years old and I would like to upgrade to a new one - which will come with Windows 8. Does Ryzom run ok under Windows 8?

What about the future of our beloved game? Will the client be actively modified to be made compatible with whatever the latest OS's require? Will we need to run an older OS to play? I know that nobody but the owners can answer that...just my mind wondering.

The problem with the UAC is that the UAC exists. If you turn it off, anything can run on (and potentially compromise) your machine. If you leave it on, pretty much everything has to be authorized except those programs that Win has made an exception for.

However, I'm not quite sure why you can't pin your shortcut to the taskbar. I have both of my clients set up that way and I'm running Win 7 Pro 64.

As for screenies, they've always gone into the program folder, even under XP. Logs go into the Save folder by default -- don't know how you got yours in the program folder. I would be very upset (and the machine would quickly get confused if logs and screenies went into my User folder. (Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't be able to find them.)

You're right, my screenies go to the Program File folder and the other items go into the Saves folder, which is under the Program Files folder. In some other games I have played, the user content is stored within a folder structure found under the My Documents folder. Using the My Documents folder is considered to follow Microsoft's best practices regarding user access. I was wondering (more or less) if there are plans to modernize the client as OS's become more and more restrictive on what user accounts are allowed to do.

And I still cannot figure out how to pin my shortcut to the task-bar in Win 7 :(

Thanks!!!

Heh -- Of course there is the small matter that *I* resist Microsoft "best practices" with fervor. I have a few documents in Documents, but anything important is in a top-level directory that I created on my main disk. :)

I put my clients on the taskbar either by dragging the shortcut to the taskbar (for my secondary client) or by opening the program directory, right clicking on the executable and then selecting Pin to taskbar. I should note that since I do not share my computer that my personal account has admin privileges, which may make a difference.

The only issue I had with ryzom when I switched to Windows 8 is setting cpu affinity, but that's only because the task manager tabs have changed names.

I'm now in 8.1, still no problems (if you disregard having to download new drivers for 8.1 for most stuff, but that's microsofts side, not ryzoms)

Also, my logs and screenshots have been put in the ryzom folder all the way back to XP. I ruddy hate the documents map on windows. My documents go where I want em.

I can tell you that there have been some adjustments to make it work when windows 7 was released. There also is the linux/macos version that features what windows uac dreams of, settings and user files stored with the user profile.

I like the current configuration on windows because i can use two clients with different settings. I think they will adjust easily when and if windows gets serious about uac (i.e. more than prompting for an ok).

The thing I've always liked about everything being under the Ryzom folder is, when switching to a new PC, you simply copy the whole folder from one machine to another, set up your shortcuts and away you go.

You can't "complete" the mainland. If one thinks one has seen or done everything there, one is kidding oneself. But be prepared to "get out what you put in," because the mainland does not coddle or hold hands.

Other games - they give you a cookie whether you succeed or not, in fact you don't even have to participate. Ryzom takes your cookie, eats it in front of you, and slaps you 2 or 3 times for bringing a cookie in the first place.

Ryzom could avoid UAC completely on versions of Windows greater than XP. As far as I can tell the only reason Ryzom asks for administrator access is because it writes into the Program Files folder - if it used the User Data folder then there would be no need at all for a UAC prompt to appear.

It's fairly straightforward to evaluate operating system at runtime and define save locations appropriately - having said that I should now do the right thing and set up a development environment for the Ryzom client code available on SourceForge and demonstrate how straightforward it is to make this change ;)

Thank you Karu, I'm new around these parts but am fascinated by the concept of an open-source MMO :)
