Suboxide: I fear you missed the sarcasm in Tumbleweed's post (naybe I missed the sarcasm in yours, then the blame is on me ;)). Having read his contributions for some time I doubt that he seriously meant what he wrote, rather attempted a reductio ad absurdum towards claims to make everything simpler.

I agree that the best way to kill a good game is removing challenges and simplifying tasks. There is no better method to drive out the long term players.

As to the original post, I agree that the start can be frustrating. Yet often those players having a particularly hard time misrespected advices, e.g. to do all the missions on Silan etc., before. Btw. it is true that some of the introductory instructions are presented only once during missions and cannot be re-read in that context. Those texts can be found anyway, at the pinnacles close to the trainers on Silan. Much can as well be found in the tutorials.

For me, an important reason that I am playing Ryzom since some time ist that it is somewhat harder than the mainstream stuff where I got bored after short time. I hope Kaerah will find out about, too,

I appreciate all you hard-core Ryzom lovers. Really I do. You have put in your time to learn the game....... ...............why Ryzom is so desolate.

well brother (or sister) i've been here playing this for years now, and i'm still saying things like your saying, that lower level players are lacking in content to keep them going more, we won't cater to you by any means, but with effort we can change things together, i believe that more is needed for both ends now, i've had many ideas, some would favor you, some would favor high lvl players, believe me when i say that we with higher skills (if even only 1) will help you, if you just ask, and i really wish that you would ask me, you may find that i feel alot like you do about alot of things in ryzom (if in doubt, search for my name as the author of the post) but that even as i complained i continued to play, now i'm much better at all the things you listed, and have friends to do things with, so there is an advantage to having a more mature out look i guess. anyway, come and don't give up so easy.

there are cookies to be had in ryzom.

I think nearly (don't count trolls) every feedback is useful and to be taken serious. But indeed one have to keep in mind that players' tastes and "frustration tolerance" are different.

I don't think that Ryzom is too hard in itself - we all were beginners once and the long-term players were those who started in a time when there were no high-level friends, many game-mechanics still unknown and many helping sites were unavailable. So it's not true that they cannot imagine how hard it is for a newbie - in contrary. The very old players grew up in a time when it was even harder because the overall knowledge and skills of the community were basically inexistent.
Ryzom has become easier in many ways already. Profession products, double xp (paid account), Silan with starter gear (was patched... 2006 i think?), New Horizon teleporters, etc.
Still I consider it as a difficult game, but for not few players it's a challenge and you can be proud after having achieved something. I've seen many games that became easier and easier over the years because players complained. And in the end it didn't lead to more players but to a "fast food" feeling, like mastering the game within a few months and then throwing it away. So personally I appreciate that Ryzom is a bit harder and not everybody's darling.
And i consider death penalty as a very mild form of "punishment". In other games you have to find your tombstone to get your gear back, you lose money or durability of your items and so on.

So while I think the game itself shouldn't become easier, I would love to see a manual that gives some hints - or better help texts. I often help new players around Fairhaven (can't lurk in all regions to help ^^) and I often notice that they have problems because they don't know important things. They are casting with sword and heavy armor (huge penalty on spell costs, range and time!) and wear no jewelery at all! No wonder they don't survive the cloppers. And not because the cloppers are too hard, they are fine for a starter region, but because the players have not enough knowledge about the game. I can't blame them for this. But it would be good if newbies would be somehow informed about the penalties on spells or the theoretical benefits of jewelery somewhere. In a manual, a beginner's guide for example or in good help texts. I love to give these basic infos to players - but often players don't ask in universe or I don't meet them.

So for me Ryzom isn't too hard but new (or shy ;) )players should have better possibilities to inform themselves about game mechanics so they are better prepared for Atys.

I agree totally with what Chancey says (my sig should be a clue to that), imagine how challenging Atys life was for us 9 years ago when we didn't have anyone to help us but ourselves. We just got on with it together. I like that Ryzom isn't a game for the WoW generation; I prefer a community that helps each other through hardship rather than one just looking to PWN each other. If challenging gameplay is the price we have to pay, so be it. There's so much more to Atys than just the gameplay anyway.

Having said that it saddens me to read what Kaerah said about people not rezzing; it's a sad symptom of what I said to a friend recently - Ryzom's community has deteriorated imho, it's not what it was when I first started. Anyone not rezzing when asked should be ashamed of themselves; they would immediately go on my (admittedly short) no-rez list. I simply can't understand the mind of someone who would just stand there.

I'm not against change to add content, I am against change to make it any easier than they've already done. My personal preference would be to have the option to turn off the double XP; so yeah maybe I am a masochist, but I'm a geek not a nerd thank you very much! :-p

You can't "complete" the mainland. If one thinks one has seen or done everything there, one is kidding oneself. But be prepared to "get out what you put in," because the mainland does not coddle or hold hands.

Don't understand ppls no rez politics either on this 'new' server.

I can get into that if you are far away from somebody in region asking you for a rez that you then say I'm to far (I will actually try 90% of times and probably succeed 50% when I think I'm to far). But common courtesy for me atleast is I heal who I see lying death close by (best still ask not everyone might notice you) and the ppl who ask in region or in a tell. (I do not port for ppl asking on uni)

---

#22 Report | Quote[en]

i help those that ask, that said, i don't monitor uni chat, so some players that know me will ask in a tell because i will travel to try to help anyone that asks me to. it's rare that i'm too busy to at least try.

(and i don't mind a dp, i can take care of that, and it's fun)

i want more content, some of it for high lvl players, some for low lvl players, for the high lvl players to keep them playing, for the low level players to keep them interested and no feel like they have no chance at all, they still need to learn about the game, but more missions, more ways to get dappers, better gear to buy from the merchants starting out when ppl don't already have a network of friends to help them would be nice too, there are some players that want to try and start out solo, which can be done, but will sooner or later have to turn to the older players to get a hand, because there come's a point with doing things totally solo just doesn't work well.

check out my quote, and then check out what cookies is about, you might find there are those of us in game that want to help any new player get started and help them learn the things not said in a book or guide.

anyway, i'm mr. helpful, and i'm willing to try, so /tell talkirc if your new and need help, i'll do my best to help, they you can go on your way debt free (i only ask that you don't give up, and he another new homin in the future when you can)

my 2 dappers again :)

Kaerah
I appreciate all you hard-core Ryzom lovers. Really I do. You have put in your time to learn the game and you think everyone else should too. But, unfortunately, you are the minority group of MMO players.

Business, is business
How may SUBSCRIBERS does WoW have? SWTOR have? Diablo? Everquest? What are the player populations on those servers? Now let's compare those titles to Ryzom. Why doesn't Ryzom attract those number of players? I suspect Ryzom population doesn't even total 1% of those other titles. I'm sure Winch Gate would salivate at attracting those numbers.

I like a lot of the concepts in Ryzom because they are so different. However, I, like most MMO players, don't have the months and years to sink into a game to learn it. It's just not going to happen on any scale like those other brands. ... (trimmmed)...

Various folk have given their points of view, and I largely agree with Chanchey and Neela and Subox more than others, and I don't even count as an Old Phart because I joined (Nov 2006) after Nevrax had gone under. I do have a couple of observations, however.

First, while a business is a business, the Ryzom community and the game would not survive the kind of population that WoW or even EQ has. Why? Precisely *because* they attract people who want to have major advancement in two weeks or two months and want to do it with a few hours of play per week. Ryzom, by its nature, is a niche game. This doesn't mean it can't be improved and it most certainly would benefit from more players, but if it is "improved" it by making it too easy to do, the "improvements" will remove the attraction it has for the playerbase it currently has. What it needs to do is figure a way to attract more people who *are* willing to put in the time it takes to appreciate it.

Second, Kaerah, you can play for as long as you like on the free trial. I hope that you do, since you have expressed an appreciation of the world of Atys and of the challenges it presents. The trial is set up the way it is to allow time for that appreciation to develop. Perhaps after a year or so, you will come to feel that you ought to subscribe. If so, good. If not, no one is applying pressure that I know of.

Finally -- there is a manual: http://www.ryzom.com/data/pdf/en/EN%20Manual%20of%20Ryzom.pdf There is a link to it from the Main page of the website at http://www.ryzom.com/. It's older than the hills, and I probably wouldn't trust it for installation any more, but the parts on the controls are still valid. I have also heard rumors that it is being updated ... but I expect that to happen Soon(TM).

Ryzom is realy unique, but the fact is game is getting old. I haven`t seen any updates in game from ages. Community is realy great, the best one i`ve ever met. Sadly routine killed my willingness to play. I tried couple days ago to start over on Silan and i find it realy hard and sometimes boring. Maybe it`s bacause of my time zone, but i saw only few people in camp and had to do all quests solo. I remember old times on ML, op wars, boss fights, lvling together. I stopped my subscription about 3 months before servers have been wiped so lost everything i had. Game doesn`t develop much even graphics are getting old. My dream is one day Ryzom will get new content with new region or continent, monsters, tribes, maybe faction. I am Kara follower and i always will be since i saw them first time i wanted to hold laser gun in my homin hands :D New game based on the story of Atys would be also good idea :)

Artus:

1. You can get your former character back when resubscribing. mail support@ryzom.com for reconstruction, it will be done after a week or so.

2. I agree that it is a major problem that no genuinely new content has been added to the game since long time. With "genuinely new" I mean that the existant content has been much improved and enriched over the years (some of that lost and not yet back since the merge such as apartment content or advanced occupations, but other added such as NH). We have the Kitin observation camps under construction, and a temple war may start next year (personally I am not really happy with, but others are expecting it impatiently). With the marauders, a new faction has arrived, and two others, the Rangers and the Trytonists, are in the making. Not to mention "small improvements" i love such as locking items of your inventory and so on. Thus it would be vastly injust to say that there is no development, there is a lot, given the tiny crew of developers.

But I agree that this is not enough. What is lacking is extension of the existant content, in the way of new maps with new regions to explore, new challenges to meet, new bosses to kill, new bugs to get annoyed ;)
Such would indeed bring inactive players back into the game, to learn what's new and not to fall back behind the noobs in their knowledge. I think that only such extension here and then will be able to stabilize and hopefully even increase the number of players.

But to be honest, such development is too much for the recent budget and workforce of Winchgate as I fear. I am not sure whether it is possible at all. One should not stop to think about, anyway. Maybe a crowdfunding initiative, or planning how setting up a new region may be done mainly by volunteers. I don't know.

Thanks for good news that i can get back my character :) I`ll think about that. Main reason Ryzom is not fun to play for me anymore is because i was playing other MMORPGs and in some way i compare Ryzom to them. I wish we could have more dynamics in game such as jumping , flying, diving. I mentioned i`m Kara and at the beginning of my adventure with game i was hoping one day i`ll look exactly like them wearing some kind of coat with hood :) It would be nice if factions could have dfferent look of armors, weapons for example Kamis more ancient, medieval style or Far East, and Karas high tech style armors. Game is awesome i love being able to choose who i can be without picking class at the character creation, and i love Atys, traveling through it, but as our friend Daomej said this is not enough.

Tumbleweed (atys)

Oh i feel your pain bro! I tell you there are so many things about this game that have to be changed because they are no fun and way too hardcore. But these people persist in their ignorance of what the real way of having fun is about!

Roads indeed supposed to be safe. Because when i'm going out on the road i intend to go from point A to point B and getting killed is not on my plans. How hard is that to understand?.. I once sent a ticket to the devs telling them to implement safety fences along the roads to make travelling around easier. Still waiting for the response.

Mobs never have to chase me! This is incredibly wrong. They must stay still and let me pass them safely. Until i decide to attack them, in that case they have to come to me one by one and not in packs because it's also illogical and no fun. How do i figure out on my own which areas are safe? This is plain stupid. I'm playing to have fun, not doing research on animal behaviour. If i want to know things like that i'd watch Discovery channel instead, you know. I asked devs to place warning signs around dangerous areas in game, that would be very helpful. They said it's on their list for 2020.

These ninja gingos of 45 level is a nightmare, i'm telling you. They pop around out of the blue when you least expect them. I once enter my apartment and was killed inside by a pack of them. The other day i went into region fully expecting it to be level 10'ish, but got killed by a monstrous bug of 250 level. No fun at all! I demand a warning popping up on screen every time i cross the border telling me the level of the zone. Finding it on my own is boring. Devs said it's on their list for 2021. Good to see they have grasp of things.

Mounts indeed absolutely useless. I bought one for myself thinking that was a good investment of the tremendous amount of money i had, 6000 dappers, could you believe that? I worked so hard to gain them! Turned out all these money were a waste when those ninja gingos popped behind and killed me. Where is fun in that? When i ride around on my mount i must be invulnerable, amirite? So many things for the devs to improve in this awful game. Like making mounts teleporting back to stables. They could become the very first magic animals on Atys. Like ponies! Magic ponies!.. Because Saving Private Mektoub is not the kind of adventure i'd like to get in.

Missions got to be completely revamped, because there is no mission journal telling me what the mission objective is and no pointer on the compass showing me the way to... Oh, wait.

I agreed that vendors must carefully collect all the trash i sell to them. One day i may want to get it back! You never know when you'll need back those precious yubo bones you sold for a quick dapper. Too bad you can't lock items in inventory to save them from being sold or lost... Oh, wait.

It's indeed hard to tell which mobs to avoid. What does it mean if one creature attacks and kills another one? Oh, just fancy stuff i guess. Make aggro sporting flashy red names with lots of skulls and such, that would be helpful. I mean when i go out of my mom's basement to walk casually in woods and i see a bear, there is a badge tied to its neck saying "Dangerous creature". If i ever get to see a man-eating sabretooth tiger (that said those are still lurking somewhere in the depths of wilderness) it must have a badge saying "Man-eating sabretooth tiger, run for your life NOW". Correct?.. Alas, it's not what Ryzom is about. Why should i learn everything in this game by trial and error? Where is fun in that? How come people even think it's fun? Weirdos.

Death Penalty is a bane of everyone in this game. This is wrong concept right from the old times when games were mostly played by masochistic nerds that used to enjoy challenges like that. But those times are gone for long. These days i want my actions having no bad consequences whatsover. I don't want to think out my actions and survive in harsh enviroments, all i want is just running around, advancing my character, enjoying sightseeing and collecting rewards every fifteen minutes or so. Otherwise i'm getting bored. If i die i want to respawn next second and not losing anything. Because losing is no fun. I want the game protecting me from the consequences of my own stupidity, laziness and ignorance, not punishing me for that. Punishing is so wrong.

Crafting in this game is really really complicated. I have to admit i couldn't figure it out myself. Those who did got to be PhD's at math or something. Make it simple! Collect stuff, buy a recipe of the Sword of Power, put the stuff together, click button and enjoy your new shiny Sword of Power! Why searching for the recipe on your own? That's no fun. I can't be bothered with the nonsense like that. If i go to shopping center to buy myself a doughnut i want to know which one has the best taste of them all. If nobody tells me what doughnut to buy how can i find it? Taste them all myself? But it's way too complicated, i just want a tasty doughnut, gimme that. Or i'll go to the shopping center next door which has all these bright pointers with flashy lights and music showing their customers where the best doughnuts are.

I hope one day the developers of Ryzom will learn what is good for business from such pillars of MMO genre as WoW and SWTOR and turn to the light side, finally understanding that catering to the cattle and game-hopping tourists with attention span of 5 year old is where the real money is in this business. Cheers.

This post so ridiculous... And this certainly not your game.

Perhaps go play age of empires or some facebook game??? Maybe even runescape.,, sound more like what you like ;)

while we are at it why dont we put glowy sticks in the game? and a dance hall!! that way you can level up doing the macarena, charleston, and other outdated dance moves (maybe even a twirk action macro???) and apply the points to whatever category you want!!!
