Hey Atysians,

It's coming up on time for Ryzom Core to apply to be a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code. If accepted this will be our fourth year in the program. Last year brought some great new tools to Ryzom Core as well as the new Character Achievement feature from SirCotare!

For those not familiar with the program organizations such as Ryzom Core apply to become mentoring organizations and Google chooses a handful of them. These mentoring organizations then choose college students who apply to implement a project idea over the summer. In return for a successful project Google pays the college student $5k and the open source project gets some cool new functionality.

The first step in this process is to become accepted as a mentoring organization. One of the most important parts of the application is a thorough list of well thought out ideas for students to use as the basis for their project proposal.

We're calling on any interested parties - Ryzom Core community members and Ryzom players - to come to our Google Plus Community or to our Summer of Code wiki page and contribute ideas. I'm sure you all have ideas for how to make Ryzom better. I know you do, I read through the ideas forum often.

Thank you!!

kool, 5k $ cash will get something done, WG gets $11 a month from me, and IF 10k of subbed players that's 110k a month, if 100k subbed players it's 1.1m a month, someone tell me how we still have bugs from 8 years ago when they're making so much (hypothetically).

TalkIRC -- look at your numbers -- the answer is there:

Assume that you have 2K subscribers: then at $11/sub we have $22,000 per month. Now compare that to $5,000 and the $5K looks a lot more significant.

Subs in Euros are EU 8/month. I don't know the relative buying power of the Euro, but I don't think it's any better than the USD and it might well be worse.

The numbers aren't available, but I'm willing to bet that 2K is far closer to the actual number of subscribers than 10K. I'm completely certain that there aren't anywhere close to 100K subscriptions.

The active player base is/was in the amount of thousands, certainly not tens of thousands (last time I heard). The paying customers are way fewer than that ..

Regarding the bugs... Can you (the proverbial you...) open tickets for code-related bugs on the Ryzom Core issue tracker? This would be awesome since we just moved from Winch Gate's issue tracker to our own and it would be nice to repopulate with real issues and start tracking these things down.

https://bitbucket.org/ryzom/ryzomcore/issues?status=new&statu s=open

Regardless of how much you pay for your subscription and what Winch Gate is working on this is a great way to add some coding experience to your portfolio and get paid doing so. I approached the player community knowing there are both individuals whom enjoy coding and would like to get paid to do so as well as individuals who really want to add something new to Ryzom. The ideas forum is full of great ideas that prospective students could implement.

Google Summer of Code and the mentoring and work performed are fully independent of Winch Gate and are solely worked on in context of the open source project. We bi-directionally merge our changes so anything you work on for us will be available to Winch Gate to use.

i love open source, because there are so many ppl working on it all the time, what you just said to me implies that the open source part of ryzom is little more then the ideas forum, by what you said the open source ppl really just perfect ideas to give WG, but does nothing to apply those ideas to the game its self.

did i get that right?

I have an idea for it, really 2 of them, check out the ideas forum and see, also, i'll post it here in a quick short idea (want more details check the link at the bottom of this reply) bulk and slot upgrades for apartments and guild halls, something bought in game with dappers, without limit (dapper sink) or with a very high limit (limited dapper sink) thus ending with loads of extra bulk and slots to fill up.

just an idea, and one that's getting good support based on the votes on my polls in the ideas forum.

apartment:

guild hall:

if you like those ideas, please vote on them to show support, and spread the word to other's that feel the same way, i would really like to see this added in game (also let's not link it to anything other then owning an apt or having a guild hall, to perhaps get this added even if not through the summer of code thing.)

TalkIRC, re post #6, if I understand you correctly, your understanding is wrong *g*

Seriously, the ryzomcore project is kind of independent of the game in that
- the open source community develops ryzom core, and they have their own code repository
- and winchgate continues development on ryzom, and they have their own code repository

But from time to time, Winchgates decides to take a change or new development from ryzomcore into the game. SirCotare implemented the achievement system during GSoC 2012, it went into the ryzomcore open source project, and then Winchgate pulled it into the game ryzom.

Winchgate also pushes back source code they develop in the game to the ryzomcore project. It works both ways. The developers working there must have a deep affection towards Ryzom, because it seems to me they are personally - as human beings - putting more time into the support of both the game here as well as the ryzomcore project than they are being paid for (disclaimer: my personal opinion without knowing any facts).

The open source project ryzomcore is also used by gamedesigners for other games still in development. That's why it's so important for both Winchgate and the ryzomcore project to have separate development activities and only certain controlled handovers.

Note that I am not affiliated with either Winchgate, nor am I active in any way in the ryzomcore project. This is just my personal opinion based on reading some of the developer blogs/news and forum threads here, and on general observations.

The result of all this is that we all should think about where to post ideas. If it is a very general idea like the famous "support for jumping" then this is such a big project that it'll never be undertaken by Winchgate alone (with the current playerbase). But it may very well be interesting to the RyzomCore project and it may be achievable if split into the right smaller sub-projects and gets some additional sponsoring (GSoC, kickstarter, etc)

If the idea involves changing the landscape of Atys, then ryzomcore is the wrong place. This ultimately needs a decision by WinchGate. Good example is the positioning of the digging spots, that created such a fuzz here.

Hope this helps in clarification.

Now that you mention the (in)famous "jumping" I saw the list of GSoC ideas and one of them is to implement alternative ways of movement. Giving jumping and diving as examples ;-)

And some additional information:
One of the mentors for GSoC is "ace" (known as VL to us) who is the CTO for Winchgate.
Another one is Botanic who is developing a game called "Tempest in the Aether" which is playing on the moon.
(for more details look at the "wiki page" link in the first post)

I don't think that's totally correct. The open source project is a platform for making non-Ryzom games. I stroll through the ideas forum because there are often good ideas there. Winch Gate does merge our code back (and we merge their code out to the public), but some of the projects implemented are not currently used by them - such as guild-based missions or camera animations (sort of like a simple cut scene that can be scripted into a mission.) These features require content on-top of the code, which Winch Gate has to implement.

Other ideas, such as the project to eliminate LibWWW and replace it with Berkelium, have immediate impact to Ryzom players as when that feature is merged into the Winch Gate code base you will immediately have a fully function web browser in-game. WebIG and API apps will be able to use JavaScript and other HTML5 technologies that Ryzom currently can't use.

It's dependent upon the nature of the feature and the Winch Gate team's desire to produce content around that feature.
