IDEAS FOR RYZOM

...no Tsunamis/Floods in the Lakes...no Sandstorms in the Desserts...no Bushfires in the Forests...no Volcanoes in the Jungles...no Caving-ins/Earthquakes for the PRs and where the ground opens up for some flowing Larva

...Blizzards and Avalanches if there where any Mountains that I don't know anything about (only for Winter obviously)

....droughts

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_disaster
(doing it for a project and was playing Ryzom and just noticed at how still the world it seems is and that it never just randomly VIOLANTLY shakes or anything like that...just *something* could be happening right now >_<)

...jsut imagine the ground breaking away suddenly into fomr an Abyss or something and you have to rush (Speeding Up Power 3) to run and outrun the falling grounds around you! ^_^

it would make for the game to be abit more rather interesting don't you think? with all of these random events come happening from all of the time

can could we make the Aty's ShAkE please?

Since we live on a giant plant/tree, I don't see how earthquakes could happen. At least not so that we notice em up on the branches. Also, I dare not imagine the effort it would take to code random events like that into the game.

"It's shite being tryker! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of Atys! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some people hate the Matis. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY. We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in, Marceline, and ALL the fresh air in the world won't make any ****** difference"

IIRC, those didn't work very well during the beta.

Muffin -

Well, earthquakes are very unlikely, but treefall should occasionally happen, especially during storms.  Since no earthquakes, no tsunami.  Floods might be possible in Lakes.

There are no mountains in Atys so no snow avalanches.  No rocks so no rock avalanches.

You missed a couple of Atys specific possibilities for natural disaster.

1: Growth event.  An area of Atys suddenly is elevated or disrupted by the growth of a giant trunk coming up out of the roots and climbing towards the canopy.

2: Canopy Branch Fall.  A portion of the Canopy breaks free and falls to the ground, denting the Bark (possibly ripping holes in it) destroying stuff underneath it.

Note that natural disasters are NOT random (except possibly earthquakes on earth and that is only in timing, not expectation).

The main thing with coding large random events is that such events have lasting effects on things like buildings. I don't think anyone in the playerbase would want to have the contents of their apartments suddenly changed from q250 to q100 due to flood damage,  find their guild-hall in Yrkanis destroyed by a falling tree or Canopy Branch, or access to favorite dig areas disrupted by a Growth event.

As for the events themselves there would be those who would complain because it happened to them and those who would complain that they missed it.

This might be a good excuse for the opening of a new Land, but it would have to be foreshadowed and a good video made of it to introduce it.  The game engine itself is not suited to having such a thing happen in real time.

well if a tree can fall can it be fatal then? ....or atleast make it that when it falls on them, you need for a team of Homins to fix/lift the tree back upright again before they can move (trapped) - so can heal, but they just will not beable to get back up again

as for the players losing things...insurances! ^_^
away to fix the economy?

and as for buildings being damaged...make it apart of the crafting (or make for anew building skill)
and where the Homins have to help fix them...and maybe that they will automatically be fixed abit each day - and so will eventually become fully fixed again by thier owners
so like if you want to use that building (NPCs will be standing outside asking you for some of your help) then you must wait until the building has been rebuildt

maybe the future lands can become those roots up in ofor the sky! ^_^ (I have always wanted to have this desire for going up to there)
and can be trigger by an event where a branch snaps and falls to the Atys

Muffin, why in heck are you trying to make digging and trekking more dangerous than it already is?  Aren't aggro mobs enough to satisfy your thirst for adrenaline?  The Second Swarming event (still not completely over) disrupted normal life on Atys to the point where we lost players.

By the way, insurance pays money for things destroyed.  Ask any person who lost an heirloom piece of jewelry in a fire if the insurance replaced it.  (Hint: it didn't.)

could can pay for some magical protections then...

There was a drought in the desert once, had to do water carrier missions in the Lakes to compensate it. The tribes went mad and tried to invade Pyr... it was something to see.

I would think the Kitin Invasions (both of them) constitute natural disasters. They certainly caused a lot of upheaval. As Sherkalyn says, there have been droughts too. We have to count ourselves fortunate that Atys has an ecology that precludes earthquakes, avalanches etc.

I like Bitty's 'Growth Event' idea, but for this to be fair it would have to be an Atys-wide multi-site event on the scale of KI2.

[Edit] . . . Or would it? More events like the Drought which are restricted to one area and open to all to participate could work.

It's bad luck to be superstitious . . .

I'm sure that an Earthquake wouldn't be that much - instead of making the Atys' shake, just instead make our Screens shake instead

#11 [en]

I love this idea! Sure it is difficult to implement and poses some issues, but in principle great idea to liven up Atys. ^^

#12 [en]

if an Earthquake happens then all of the Mats should be reset and randomly redistributed randomly :P

it could be player controlled too - just like if there is an unbalancedments in the Atys' or something just like that

I know the game doesn't really push for a "real life" experience, but I'd love to see strong winds during storms forcing players to slow down even if only a bit (maybe to 95%), especially if they're moving against the wind. Not that treks aren't already *fun* in bad weather ..

---

#14 [en]

so if you can be running with thet wind then you can have a Speed Boost also?

#15 [en]

Why not? Note it wouldn't necessarily be a good thing, less control over where you're going.
