As I'm the starter, let me summarize nowadays replies:
. . . .
Arfur: who needs a market? (AKA i sell to resell but it really doesn't care)
. . . .

I'm afraid you've misunderstood me - I value the Markets highly and I wish they were used more by players. When I was a noob I was severely disappointed that the merchants had nothing for sale that interested me.

I sell to the Merchants to make available to other players the things I don't need (weapons I've crafted or mats I've looted) - these things would otherwise go to waste. When grinding craft who would make something and then destroy it?

I always get a thrill when I sell something because it means I've helped another player.

It's bad luck to be superstitious . . .

Thinking on it some more, only in the Desert does one need to go outside the q50 area to get to the q200 and q250 gear.

Spoken like someone who never had to sweem to Avendale :)

Well...
Tryker (way to Avendale) looooong but save
Fyros (way to Dyron) medium but up to level 160 agros (Gullie) in between (possible to avoid them though)
Matis medium and only lvl 50 agros
Zorai same as Matis

It's not really hard to get to Dyron but still there are some agros on the way.
Back in my starting days I've been to Dyron and Zorai before I've been to Thesos - and the way to Zorai was at the time where it was the last time necessary to cross Underspring (during the Kitin invasion that lead to the opening of the Zorai-Fyros portal - now a days I'm touring the hole desert nearly each time I'm logging in (all regions by foot and on my own without collecting any DP)

I would point out that the reason that the higher q items are only available in the outlying villages is to encourage people to go look in the outlying areas! It's an incentive to move around.

Thanks for addressing this question, Bittymacod. Yeah, encouraging moving around is good, but is it really worth the "price" in terms of limiting the functionality of the markets?

1. This approach to encouraging us to visit the villages feels overly contrived, because it results in a geographic distribution of markets that is the opposite of what you might expect in a realistic situation. (In Ryzom, the villages have bigger markets and better shopping opportunities than the cities, which is the opposite of RL)

2. This approach limits the use of the markets, because people find it inconvenient to travel to the villages just to find out what goods are available (as illustrated in Fyrosfreddy's second point). Getting to the villages isn't difficult, just inconvenient. (There's a reason why the bigger markets tend to be in the bigger cities in RL!)

If Ryzom wants to encourage us to travel to other cities, they should also provide apartments and guildhalls in those cities imho...

If Ryzom wants to encourage us to travel to other cities, they should provide more reasons to visit them, they are currently close to being ghost towns/tourist destinations. Apts, guilds, industries, better mission support, better tp support are all needed. I agree that relying on markets to move homins while keeping capitol markets nerfed is bad business.

I've been saying for ages that longer sell times are needed. Buy orders are needed. easier ways to filter out the storage crap is needed.

Guilds handing out crafts is nice and all but ryzom really needs a better market system.

Wowww... at last. :)

note: I have purposely refrained from proposing the introduction of an Auction House too... but it should be good (one step at the time ;)).
(e.g. with an AH or, at least, a working market, it can start having sense mass moving items with mektoub caravans...)

(little OT) note: IMHO cities lack also of many other attractions, like working taverns (where "working" is "can sit and drink/eat something in company", "can sleep in bed before logging off", etc.), houses (there are very few, opened, e.g. in Pyr, nearly none in FH).

... or in case of raw materials try to add it to an existing stack at the merchant and refresh the time on it automagically untill it reaches the full stack size.

Now this I like :)
