Intermission 2: Marelli in her teens

From her arrival in the New Lands onwards, the rest of Miarelli's life is fairly well documented and thus verifiable, as is that of all new arrivals. Although records of her early life often include little details about her, as she was nobody of importance yet, and so these details can only be obtained from testimonies by her or homins who knew her. And those homins who knew her in her teens would hardly believe she is the same person today, or that she would ever become a Matis Noble.

Young Miarelli was shy, modest, and not very fond of city-life, being used all her life to living in a small camp. After arriving in Borea, she stayed in the refugee camp for over a Jena Year, postponing her departure as long as possible, in contrast to most refugees who were anxious to join the Matis society. And even after leaving, she would prefer staying in Davae over Yrkanis for many more years.

Miarelli described her first years in the New Lands as being regularly surrounded by events of great significance that felt above her head. Though she took an interest in the politics and happenings she saw around her and wished to participate, she felt too inexperienced and insecure about herself to really take to the forefront. Records show she was present at many of the important events that happened during those years, but never as more than a quiet, unremarkable tag-along.

During her year in the refugee camp, she trained as many skills as she could, but after leaving she developed a particular interest in the Kami's magic. She has admitted that, though she felt it was too early for her to commit to a faction, during those years she felt more drawn to the Kami than to the Karavan. One can only speculate this may have been due to her years spent in the company of Zoraïi, but it does make her a good example that just because Matis may stray in their younger years, it far from means they are lost forever.

The first guild she joined, shortly after getting acquainted around the Majestic Garden, was one of Tryker origin. It was a guild that tried to stay out of politics, and focussed on their love of harvesting and rediscovering the lands, staying true to the traditional Tryker values of "freedom and fun for all".

And yet, Miarelli did already show some of the treats that would later facilitate her rise to her current position. Even as a teen, and even if it was in the misguided elemental magics, she was determined to strengthen and train herself alone, and could often be found training by herself for days on end on the beaches of Aeden Aqueous. She also readily displayed her desire to challenge herself by travelling alone into areas far too dangerous for someone with her limited combat skills. She persisted in this despite suffering many injuries, and perhaps it was these that had turned her nature much more grim by age 20.

And with that, we'll move on to series 3, which will hopefully be able to remain on schedule again.

At the moment I estimate I'll end up with 6 series in all. Currently the letters are meandering along calmly, but I promise I am building up to something, though ofcourse I can't promise that "something" will satisfy everyone.

Dear Jelathnia,

I think my last letter has finally cleared my head again, confused as it was trying to explain in just a few words things I do not even really understand while living them all day. I realised this is why I write my letters to you, and not to myself or a future historian. Even thinking about doing the latter just leaves me terribly confused what to write, how to write.

So, I should not think about such things. To explain or not, to lie or not. I should write what I feel I want to tell you. And that doesn't include lies, that'd be rather pointless. As for explanations... perhaps I can ask you to just always assume I am only telling an oversimplified version because I simply lack the space to include all the details? It is not my aim to write a guidebook, just to share my life with a friend.

If it also gives me an outlet, and future Matis some knowledge of the present, that is a nice bonus, but I will no longer consciously consider it.

And it is not hard to decide what I want to share with you. I've touched at it briefly in my last letters already. How much it pains me to see all our work (of me and the other Nobles) being undone by this whole affair.

You see, back in 2551, it seemed the Matis were becoming isolated on the global political theatre. The Fyros Akenak and Tryker Taliari were strengthening their ties and uniting against us, and the Zoraï were far from the Verdant Heights and barely getting involved in foreign politics, and already more inclined to side with the Fyros.

But due to a year of hard work, we re-established ourselves. We made amends to the Tryker Taliari and immediately opened on friendly terms with the newly established Zoraï Awakened. The political rivalry between the Fyros and Matis remained - after all the centuries of enmity between our races it might've been impossible to resolve that - but the Tryker and Zoraï made clear their position that this conflict was between us and they would take no sides in it.

So we were once again on equal terms with the Fyros on the international arena. And some more years later, we even had them on the defensive. We made being an Akenak such a nightmare that no Fyros wanted the job anymore, and we even made them completely forget about tending to a cure for their ailing Emperor. Without Akenak or Emperor, the Fyros have effectively been absent from the international political scene for years now.

It could have been a great opportunity for us to establish our political dominance. We would finally reap the fruits of our work. But now, it's all gone to ruin. Our own government has now been ineffective for years, unable to exert any influence. Major events happen on Atys and the Nobles are no longer able to formulate responses to them, no longer able to steer them or leave our mark on them. We have become politically irrelevant ourselves. It saddens me greatly.

Decatae ata satiae,
Marelli

[[OOC: Most of the events mentioned in the last letter are events I still documented in the Event Log on the wiki, before I stopped doing so due to lack of time.

See, for example, Water Woes,
A Fragrant Gift,
and Tears of the Emperor.

Though in Marelli's mind those events are probably coloured a little differently than how they actually happened... ]]
