Runs fine for me on distro's ATI driver on one machine and Nvidia's proprietary on the other. You never said if there were any logs created?

Hm.. It does sound like a driver problem, jave you tried setting all the graphic settings to the lowest possible? You could also check the xorg output terminal/screen for errors.

I'm not sure about logs, where would those be created?

Finally managed to create a character after some help on the Dev site - I added : DisableVtxAGP = 1; to my client.cfg. Apparently it causes slower running but I've not hit that problem so seems to be an OK fix. - Thread is here http://dev.ryzom.com/boards/18/topics/5882?r=5898 If anyone wants to have a read.
