IDEAS FOR RYZOM

This came up in Universe chat earlier today--why not make the built-in MP3 player compatible for Linux and Mac (and possibly Windows 7)? Technology is marching on, and the player--which is compatible with Windows XP--is not compatible with any of the operating systems that players use most of the time. As usual, just have be an option alongside running a background program like iTunes or Windows Media Player or the like, but make it compatible with Linux and Mac (and Windows 7).

Walking the bark and searching for understanding, always.

I support this idea. But I also have my own idea. How about allowing players to type in the path of the file in their harddrive (or the internet)? Instead of having an MP3 let us have an In-Game-Radio that players can type commands in to the chat window to add favourites or play a; song, playlist, or internet radio station. Something like /Radio Play <file path> and even add other commands like adding a favourite to our radio /Radio addfave <name> | <file path or URL> And let the radio use the following File extensions *.MP3, *.WAV, *.WMA, *.M3U, or *.ASX, and I think *.PLS associated with Winamp. This way if players want to listen to a podcast or an internet radio station they, simply use /radio play command with the Correct URL. This will also allow players to share their playlists with friends in game.

@Topic:
I never had problems with the internal MP3 player in Win7 (x64)
And I think it was running fine on ubuntu as well (don't remember it well, last test was ~1 year ago)

@Sueky:
How about instead of supporting format a, b and c just use the frameworks on the systems (directShow for Windows, GStreamer for Linux, ...) this wouldallow to listen to a lot more file types depending on what you've installed (e.g. ogg, flac, ac3, ...)
But you gave me another idea: how about support for DLNA ?

Edit: added Link

Absolutely, by all means support all formats. I’ll behappy with simply having access to online radio stations from in-game. ^^

You were probably using windows version under WINE. That's working fine yes.

Native version does have issues.

Nope, was the laptop of a friend and it was the native version (that was running from my USB drive) maybe I've just been lucky and it had a working hardware config or something like that...

I'm not against it, but I wouldn't use it. Before I found out there was a (broken) mp3 player built into the game, I was already in the habit of keeping whichever MMO I played windowed and using an external mp3 player.
