Hello Good Homins

My Name as you can see is Djindaar, and straight up front I am an older gamer now retired and have some time to not only engage in my other passtimes, but also, to get into a decent engaging, complex and satisfying MMO again.

I have gamed for more years than I care to think about ;p, but found it a very satisfying activity for many years when having the time. As for MMORPG's have played all the major and many minor MMO's and am particularly fond of a very select few.

The Modern MMO's never held my interest for long so will not dwell on those, with their hold your hand and cut and paste activities acss the genre', but, games like EQ (original), SWG with it's deep crafting, Fallen Earth for a time I enjoyed but I now see that the game is finished but may return at some point. But you maybe are getting the picture now that I like the MMO's that need patience, determination, have a level of complexity that reward exploration and experimentation.

I beta tested Ryzom back in the day, think it may have been around 2003 and enjoyed the beta, even though the game if I recall had a shaky start was on then off at one point I think, been a while.

At that time I did not have as much free time to immerse myself and played Ryzom on and off a few times, never getting beyond Silan except once for a time, and I cannot even remember details of any old accounts.

So, I found it on steam a while back and played out a couple or so characters and slowly got back into it testing out activities deleting characters and creating new ones to get a feel for it all agin, and found I had having more time I was at last enjoying myself in Ryzom again. So I downloaded the client from the main site and subbed for a year. See how I would get on commiting to the game and pushing myself to grind out a character.

I created 1 for each race, but primarily got a Tryker to 50 in fighting and Harvesting. I solo'd all the content, developing myself further when I failed and kept pushing, I wanted that 50 boss in the jungle to prove I could, and by the skin of my teeth and the help of those xmas gift Life eggs (they saved me ;)...) I reached my personal goals for Silan.

I helped others with the bosses and felt like it was time to hit Fairhaven.

My crafting is still low around 44 armour crafting being my highest, others in 20's for now, Lake foraging around 53.

I am still wearing my hard won Ranger gear and my Fire and Wrath blade. I have found the blade to be a boon and a curse really, it has decent damage for its level, but, nothing else store bought comes close yet, so I need to either work on my weapon crafting more or see if I can buy one with decent damage closer to my now level F60.

Currently I am searching out and marking resources, Silan realy spoils a character and the mainland is a lot harder, I am sure many new players will be put off when they get here, maybe the harvesting and exploration in Silan needs to reflect the mainland more as one ventures further north, I don't know?.

But I have not been put off,I am loving the challenge, watching the mobs near potential resources etc, navigating the weird mutlivel map makes up my Tryker home. Swin for ages to find that a waterfall blocks my passage, and swimming more to find a way through, good old exploration gaming that I find quite refreshing actually. Bag space can be a chore when gathering mats for a craft session, but hey ho, "get stronger young Tryker you can catch up your crafting I am sure"

Still in the lakes area (central area) killing kipee and Stinga's etc for armour mats, (occasional other mobs)trying to get my crafting up, slowly slowly catchee monkey hey?

I am in no hurry to become uber, there is time for that over the next 12 months and if I can still find enjoyment, then way beyond that time. So far I am enjoying mysel. It's all a problem solving activity right now and I like that. Once my map is full of gaily coloured little flags showing me where my hard found mats are located I will be an even happier and more satisfied Hominid.

So give me a wave ingame, wish me luck and hope you all have as much fun as I am having.

Djindaar

Hola --

No worries about becoming uber -- you never will. *grin*

Welcome. Myself I have been away for many months (in the time of the outer world), but Atys calls me again.

So, been racking my brain as to what questions I may need to ask that suit my possible future goals, aspirations or general curiosity.

In most MMO's I always went the DPS route mainly ranger and bows, I am an old ranger romantic in that sense. Though I am 2h on this character as it seems the most viable as yet.

Maybe I will take my Zorai ("Kishookapala", don't know how I dreamt up that name but I like it ;p....) through the Ranger rites one day, who knows, someting to aspire to, and, I do like a challenge and I know or at least get the impression that it is iondeed a great challenge. Djindaar will be my main focus for now though as I feel my way forward.

So how viable is ranged fighting, or would you say its a support activity?

Decent way to make Dapper? Took a profession (Water-carrier) but not even started on that yet till I can find and safely get around (Explored more and levelled more). Probably a higher level activity I am not ready for yet so being realistic on that score.

Due to low levels of activity at the lower end of the character range in Fairhave, I doubt my armour crafting will bring any coin in, it is still sub par for area, and my own use anyhow.

I have done a small handfull of quests here but most are out my reach given that hominid kill quests are more group focus quests as it's a given that you hit one tribesman you pull all, so mainly sticking to available resource ones. So mapping out the areas is my full time activity as I slowly level Fight, Forage and Craft skills. Main focus is getting a good FS up so I can venture wider. So any advice for setting up goals certainly welcome.

Thanks
Djinn

So how viable is ranged fighting, or would you say its a support activity?

Ranged weapon are very powerful compared to others branch. But there is different kind of ranged weapon in Ryzom, all of them don't suit all kind of activities.
Launcher and Auto-Launcher are the one that does the most dmg (with zone dmg) but you will need to have packers with you and craft your ammo often. They are mainly used in outpost wars.
While pistol/riffles (and bow-riffles) do much less dmg to only 1 target at a time. But you can hold more ammos on your backpack (which means you don't have to be with you). Also, they requires less materials to craft ammos.
You can use them in daily PvP (their range is a big plus) as well as in PvE (since you have a big range you can hunt some of the named bosses alone when you know how to use them correctly).

Considering the fact they are (to me at least) very powerful, their is a big downside that makes them not that popular: while figting and magic skill need to level up only one branch, ranged weapons require you to level up 3 branchs. With those weaposns you will need to craft your own ammo and to craft you need to harvest materials and to craft more powerful ammos you need to craft them in higher quality. So, you need to: master at least one harvesting branch -> you need to level up the crafting skill for the corresponding weapons -> you need to level up the ranged weapon skill as well.

Just wanted to point out that unlike other MMO, there is no "class" system in Ryzom, you do it all from the same toon. Train melee fight to build up your Hit Points, train heal because you dont want to be the guy saying " sorry cant res you because I dont heal", train ele for dps.

Stingas are good to train on in lakes, they only have a cold attack so a simple set of cold jewels will reduce the damage they do and you only need Light Armour which has no Malus.

Weapons, note that targets are either dodge or parry. in general 1 hand work better v dodge targets and 2 hand better v parry targets. Stingas dodge btw.

and welcome to the rootball :)

Thanks Itzy, I knew that ;)

I created one of each race in order to see how I felt connected or immersed with them. It's going to be a long ride and I want to make sure I am happy with my character.

We do tend to project through them and give them a life of their own in a sense, or, at least I do, so that connection is important to me. Trying all four made sense for me in that regard. Of the four I prefer these two, Tryker and Zorai.

I have always planned to have Djindaar as my main focus for the 1st years sub, dropping into my alt in Silan when I need a change of pace and clear my head from grinding him up through the lakes and beyond. Think he is fs(64) as of today, so still a baby in the larger scheme of things as yet. (And yup, need to push magic with him, it is his lowest element up to now at a low 24, even my armour crafting is 45, so aye needs work, even if I just use magi-pull on mobs instead of taunt, at least it will level a little each fight)

I probably will though, concentrate on one other for when I need a break or get frustrated, and that will be my Zorai "Kishookapala" purely for my own selfish RP in my head-zone playtime, so I don't burn out with Djinn. But he will be a very slow burner for when I need to just chillaxe and am happy to leave him on Silan till I get all his professions up to 50-60. He will probably get only 1/5th of Djin's gametime if even that, so in no rush with him and I am looking at my characters in the long term.

Aye I have been using parry on Djinn as he is 2h Sword. Might play around with Kishoo on double daggers, and see how he survives, will be funny watching that long-shanks somersaulting his attacks:p

One thing did cross my mind, which I will post about seperately here, and that is Roleplay, now that I have mentioned it very briefly above.

I was in an RP clan way back when I played WoW for 2-3 years, and also did some in Fallen Earth to. I was not a purebread deep and soulfull RP'r in any great way, but enjoyed my time doing it on and off over the years.

And have been thinking about trying some RP here at some point with my Zorai. So I think that in those times when I play Kishoo I can chill and delve into the lore during those sessions with him, would be a nice quet passtime between grinding Djinn.

Do not assume that you speak for all just because you are the loudest voice; there are many who disagree that simply have no desire to waste words on you.

I was stoked when I crafted my first Bike. (Was a Biker in RL for years, back wont let me ride now alas, hehe, people say buy a Trike?! hehe, don't tempt me I say ;p....)

I have seen a post on Steam I think it was that mentioned a possible revamp of the game at some point in the future, but won't be holding my breath. Good to know someone else recognises the title :p
