ok, so a contest; this is not.
but i'd like to see some peoples' inputs (solely for fun)

i know a lot of you like to write stuff whether it's poems or stories but i want to take those skills and bring them to their simplest form - a haiku!

haiku's are short poems or stories that are formed in three lines in a pattern based on syllables (in english that is) e.g, 5,7,5 - so 5 syllables the first line, 7 the second and 5 the third.

an example, albeit a rubbish one, would be:

i fight, reluctant: - 5
in hope of becoming strong. - 7
deluded? i am. - 5

they don't have to rhyme or even make sense:

haiku's are easy;
but sometimes they don't make sense.
big green kipucka.

see, makes no sense at all.

so, off you go.. give it your best shot.. or your worst as that is likely to be funnier :)

There's actually a little more to the classic Japanese haiku. The highest forms involve observation of nature and the first two lines are supposed to set the scene and the third complete the observation and add a philosophical meaning. That being said, a lot of haiku (and I do mean a LOT) do not adhere to that "rigor".

Here are three on why I love Atys.

On shores of Fount Lake
Stinga rest as the sun fades.
Sap rises as sparks.

A stirring of earth;
Behold, a blue bird comes forth!
Swift, it climbs on high.

Fairhaven beaches,
White dust by rippling water.
The sun flares, then fades.

bitty, you're correct.. i know a little about the origins and 'official' forms of a haiku but i didn't want to go into it all that deeply.. mostly because it'd be long to explain but also because it may remove some of the fun or childish elements of them.
i admire the proper versions and wish i had the brains to create them in such a way, alas, i am but a bog standard, english halfwit.
good entries by the way, they are nicely thought out :)

talk, as for winnings, we may need to do a cookie event as i hadn't really thought about it… perhaps, in hindsight, the word "contest" was a poor choice :P
and excellent poem too!
(p.s. the quote is a snoopy original :P)

This looks like such a fun post and i have a little inspiration. Here is my entry, although i think i bent the rules a little with construction, at least I think the amount of sylables are correct. :)

Once upon a time
There was a brave young woman
on Atys you say?

Yes, in the forest!
In the forest, Thats silly!
Not so, I told you

She must be Matis
Only they are so crazy
Fools roam the forest

She is not of Lack,
But Had a courageous heart
Not even Matis!

The Maze Terrifies
Warns the Grove of Confusion
Brave souls rarely tread

Yet a Tryker girl
So bold as to be stupid
Roams through it alone

I stood frozen, shocked!
Jaw dropped down in disbelief
Full admiration

Her confidence high
While she struts along unfazed
Even Cuttlers scared

I must acknowledge
It demands humility
I offer salute

She offers a smile
She keeps right on walking by
Who is she i think?

Elite warrior
It was all her name badge said
Such modesty too

I asked who she was
A protector of the plants
Stay away from them!

Obvious vision
The symbol of her mission
A tree in a heart

At last i knew who
And how she became so brave
An ancient Dryad!

Going through the jungle
Upon a Kipee I stumble.
Then I shout “Yipee!”

I don’t fight them with fire
The result would be dire.
But I do love Kipee!

Kipees are so humble
They don’t get into rumble.
But they sound creepy!

Yubo, Bodoc and Igara,
Those Kami and even Kara
Should love Kipee!

Pretty clearly not a haiku, or even a haiku chain, but I like the use of the aab rhyme scheme with the b-rhyme repeated in each verse. The unbridled enthusiasm of the speaker comes through very well.

This reminds me that I need to get back to my songs. Blues Songs of the Harvester will be coming out Soon(TM).
