As discussed in another thread recently I am proposing some means to reduce language conflicts on our new server:

Language tags

Every player should add one (or two) lines on top of his character profile to indicate spoken languages. These lines should be generic language tags so that every player can read them.

1. First line: Spoken languages

Syntax:

Lang: <native language code> [, <additonal language code> [, <more languages>]]

where language code is the ISO639-1 2-letter language code with voluntary additions in brackets. voluntary additions may be +, - or any relevant information about the language in a short, normative way.

Examples:

1. Lang: de, en(+)
This means the player's native language is german he likes to speak engish too.

2. Lang: en(US), fr(RP-)
The player's native language is english with the additional information that he/she is from US. The players knows french but does not like to be adressed in character in french (does not want to do french role play).

3. Lang: ru, en(+), de(-)
The player's native language is russian, he/she likes to speak english and knows some german but doesn't like to use it very much.

2. Second line: Translation volunteers

Syntax:

Tr: <from language code>-<to language code> [, <additional translating capabilities>]

Examples:

1. Tr: en-de
The player is fine with helping to translate from english to german. Maybe he/she is not good enough to provide written english without errors, or he/she would need a lot of dictionary work to do it.

2. Tr: en-de, de-en
The player is fine with helping to translate from english to german as well as vice versa.

Remarks

Of course everyone is free to ignore this - or add more lines to indicate additional information like timezone, role playing preferences etc.

Any idea how to point out the preferred language?
I know I am weird that way, but in mmorpg my preferred language (despite bad grammar) is English, but I am actually a native German speaker. But I find it weird to write German in a mmorpg context...

:-D

Lang: de(-), en(+)

Edit: I thought about the + and -.... maybe it's better to make them an indicator of preference rather than skill level.
Edit2: Updated answer to new +, - meaning.

for the Lang tags it may indeed be easier to use the + and - as prefered language

for the translation tags I'd go for skill level..

Changed the examples to + and - as preferred language.

hmm not sure if it's fixed by now but when us marauders got our custom marauder title for building the camp we had to delete everything in profile.
If we didn't and selected the title it didn't work and title wasn't shown.
(no idea about other titles)
