1. I walked thru PR and chose my path carefully enough and was patient enough to sneak by all the mobs w/o being hit. One of our HOs back in the day used to take a Level 20 alt toon on a world tour about once every 3 months

2. If I can remember correctly, parry w/o boosts or special items

Base Toon: 250
Staff & Shield: +20 +30
NPC Armor: +24

With that level gear you can stand in front of a mob and take hits but many of them will be no damage. You can actually do more damage to yourself with HP credits by attacking the mob, then just standing there.

3. Another way of looking at it I will use an example for. Back many years ago, we decided we wanted to see just how successful we could be digging sups, figuring out the seasons, and refill times, etc. We got very good at it.... tho it kinda made it boring.

As you know many sup spots have aggro on or close to the spots. And wanting to avoid killing the last one, when sup time was coming. So in our team of three, two were in dig gear and I would taunt the last mob(s) around in circles while they dug out the sups .... Yes, I'd get hit but, between running and the high parry, the HP regen rate was higher than the damage rate. When they were done harvesting the sups, I'd still be at or v. worst case, very near the 6700 or whatever HP I started with.

My name is Julian Schönbächler, I'm a programmer and professional game designer from Switzerland working at Koboldgames, a small Swiss game studio. TL;DR - In my research work for my MA thesis I focus on open-source game development, its structure and hierarchy as well as the motivation of the people involved in the project. I try to explore how game design processes function on games that are developed in the open and how collaboration on a project might serve an educational purpose. I believe I first came into contact with open-source games in my early secondary school days, when I was searching for free games on the internet to play on our old and slow Mac computer. SuperTuxKart is one of the games that still has a special place in my heart. To this day, it is a free and open-source game that receives a good portion of attention and is in active development. The open-source gaming community was also the place where I took my first steps in my game design career. An environment that provides you with free access to source code and assets, techniques and tutorials. One that actively encourages people to become contributors and joining a community. For me that was the best insight into how game development works and all the aspects it consists of I could ever get. Eventually, even though not really intended, years later I found my way back to the art of design and did my studies in the field of game design.
I am still lurking around in many of the open-source communities I once actively contributed to and maybe I will have time at hand to become more engaged in some of them. But over my whole engineering journey free and open-source software along with its development played a big role in my personal growth.

Now back to topic. Design and development of open-source games looks different compared to how it is generally done in the industry. Note that I would like to differentiate between game design and game development. While game development is often used as an umbrella term for all the specialized fields that the creation of a video game requires, design however is focusing onto the ruleset and mechanics as well as the balancing and the motivation design. The open-source games community as I experienced it is often more driven by the development aspect. Combined with other differences e.g. of having no fixed deadlines or compulsory feature requests, the design process is quite interesting and unique. The feedback loop tends to be more direct, the community as a collective can drive a project and participate in shaping the result.
Besides, actively developing on a game project in the open is a whole different experience. The motivation on working on a project in your spare time can range from fun-seeking to the eager of learning new things. I want to explore this kind of development deeper and maybe shape the future of free and open-source game development a little by giving back some design knowledge I have learned back into the communities (eh, every student dreams big, right?).

So for now, I am in the need of data. Because researching something I only halfway understand will not work here. That is why I prepared a survey with questions about yourpersonal experience with open-source game development, the projects you are involved in and the hierarchical structures under which they are developed. It consists of:
  • Basic demographic questions
  • Questions about your education and background
  • Your open-source engagement
  • Experienced project structures and hierarchies
  • Your personal involvement in open-source game projects

Oh. My. God. The memories! This is some very impressive stuff kaetemi, do you happen to know why the ring was originally removed? I never understood why it had to be "recreated" with other tools like the Scenographic Editor or refactored into the idea of Pocket Worlds since it was already there and running years and years ago.


Ring is a long work to fix it. Happy to see Kaetemi working on.

But at begin, ring server has never worked well. People who use them a lot like me know how unstable are. Lot of player stuck on ring, crashs without any way to reconnect event in main land. It's why we have deactivated it until someone have time to fix it.

Scenographic Editor and pocket worlds are very different from Ring. It's not in the goal to recreate the ring.

Scenographic Editor are now the tool used to add elements in a zone like on Nexus. It's much powerful than ring since we can place in all axes (x, y, z), rotate them and scale them.

Pocket worlds are also different, the goal is have instances in game, not outside the game. Guild islands are a pocket world. So it's used for internal projects.

These projects are at first for the leveldesigners, and i hope, will be released to players.]]>

I did all melee years ago most solo without a heal alt (but not all I had an alt sometimes and even once in a while a friend)

Normally I would do plants like ppl have said before then in the end move to horncers in loria and/or kinchers in void.

Use enchants when you can I remember my fastest skill I ever lvled (in my mind it took me just couple of days but will have been longer with all the slacking) was staves by kind of cheating with this bad boyps. this was a merge pressie so not cheating but yeah the sap load on this bad boy meant I hit a horncer, kincher once then run and enchant to death in no time. My exact setup I forgot but yeah this thing got me trough mastering it verry quickly]]>

In such a case one consults BM or other info about where to go to find suitable high (or low) level plants based on ones current melee level, then one goes to the suggested area(s) to then either simply wander about looking for any such plants, or one speeds up the process by now and again using /target (plantname) in hopes of locating a nearest such plant.

When so or so a first such plant has been reached, then consider the following: for that and every other such plant when found, you set a flag in the M map to mark its location ... that makes finding them an other time (or after their respawn) easier then it was the first time finding them.

The result of such flagging out of their locations, seen in the M map: a cluster of such flags marking (1) the bounds of the area in which they be located .... (2) the specific locations of those various 'sources' (in this case of loot instead of material dug up out of the ground) ... (3) actually killing the individual plants is then the melee analog process to digging up mats at individual popped sources.

I hope that comparison will help some homin(a) better understand the foraging process ... i, personally, find it helpful to so compare the two processes ... 8)]]>

First off, the materials amounts are different from the list in the first post. This is probably due to the missions overhaul done during patch 3.5.0, aka JY 2603 patch. They now may more, but also ask for more items.

So anyway, here is the updated BOM (bill of materials):
  • 8 MA MQ (Rilonus) pants + 8 MA MQ (Rilonus) vests
  • 40 LA MQ (Hobenus) vests
  • 56 LA MQ (Hobenus) sleeves:
  • 1 MA MQ (Rilonus) vest + 1 MA MQ (Rilonus) pants
(here the amounts are the same as previously, but the timer has been lengthened from 1 minute to 16)


After completing the 4 prerequisite missions, you start the rite by talking to the barman in Pyr, and only after you are sent to the Water Breakers chief.

The actual rite only starts at (mid?)night, as hinted by the last item in the text:

So, go to Northlake Farm, and wait until it's 12am. Then and only then will the NPC talk to you. You may have to enter/exit the Farm several times to trigger his dialogue, this is an old problem.

The other two NPCs that you visit will trigger easily.

Finally, here is a durability comparison on items made with fine generic materials. Top is prior to rite, bottom is after the rite:

    That's an interesting idea. I want to add a better way to customize your material database, which could then be used in any of the tools. You *can* add filters already, but the system is ugly. I also want to add cool wizards so you don't have to click trough tons of settings but answer a few questions instead.


    I tried to make something similar by editing the database using wiki moblist to get all mob cho/exc/sup in individual entries but kipeecraft wouldn't accept duplicates. it works for manual recipes tho but saving and loading recipe will give error again.

    the filter thing i suggested would need to exclude dig mats and have dig in their own 0-300 filter. seeing as they can be harvested in every quality and only depend on your skill level (e.g. you can dig q10 supreme aslong as you have high enough root dig to be able to dig sup/root)]]>

    For a while I created a specific topic for each project, with news and updates, asking players to give feedbacks and suggestions. As it was long to do and we had very few answers, I stopped. Do you think it would be interesting to restart it?
    We could also add more details on the Roadmap.

    Sometimes one piece of information is enough, sometimes you have to talk about the things that are coming. The Ranged Patch is definitely one of the latter. I don't think you can make a generalized statement about this.

    Changes of this weighting don't come often.

    The important thing is that information is easily accessible. Keeping the roadmap up to date would probably be even more valuable internally than for the external view - but I can't estimate that. One topic in the forum per development would probably be sufficient. That linked in the roadmap would be perfect. If it changes the game sustainably. Atysmas, for example, can remain a nice surprise.

    What I do not fully understand, however, is the following: You mean, it is very time-consuming to inform the community about the upcoming project steps. But shouldn't this information be available internally for a long time, so that the person who implements it knows what to do? Aren't these decisions backed up with arguments? For me, this is part of a project and could be published in a slightly modified copy&paste format. Otherwise there seem to be completely different problems than the information flow towards the players.]]>

Wuaoi has also explicitly said that Rangers can fight for their guild, and condones hunting bandits ("Killing them is a favour to all civilised Homins in Atys."). Most relevant to this topic, when asked about attacking diggers in Prime Roots, he said "That would not be a matter for the Rangers as an organisation, but a matter for your individual action.".
       By your words and actions, you have proven time and again that you are less of a Ranger than anyone I know, even my Marauder acquainatances! 

    @Sinvaders - Craftsmanship transcends arbitrary lines as it's hard to not respect skill.

    @Azazor - At the end of the day, what is Ryzom if not a game? One of my biggest problems here has been how many folks forget what the G in RPG means.]]>

    there could be &lang=de in the app.ryzom.com~ url, change 'de' to 'en' or click the country flag you want top left corner and your billing profile could have ?language=de in the url, change 'de' to 'en' or click the country flag you want.

    on your forum-profile page there are 2 rows of language checkboxes, those are to ignore and hide topics in those languages and generally do nothing for overal site language.
    check the ones you want to ignore/hide.]]>
