I'll give you some advice about the start island. Take your time and enjoy it. It's quite different from the mainland and you learn a lot while you are there. Do all the missions from the trainers; preferably the magic and melee ones together and the crafting and digging ones together. The Kami and Karavan also have missions you can do once done with those. Finally, Chiang the Strong has mission you can do. Completing all those will earn you quite a bit of xp, dappers, and some gear.
