Would it be instinctual for homins to cover their noses at bad smells?
Finally, from the lore perspective, are homins intellectually stunted?
That is, are the homins lack the intellectual capacity to come up with new things?
That is what we are implying by not "inventing" new things.
If we are afraid of making it easier with gas masks, than build something into the invention or use or disposal or creation, or or that makes it only slightly advantageous.
Maybe it is not a gas mask but a special tiara with malus, have to be sap charged/uses sap heavily, requires very special items to craft, wears out fast.
