If, and only if, there is a solution to make this possible without pvp tags, then I can see it working.
Even then, Daomei points out a very good possibility of griefing. Even without a reward for the players joining the NPCs, they may do so for the sake of forbidding others to get the prize.
Granted, I'm not too happy about the mindless nature of the hunts in their actual shape. However, I don't see this to be much of a solution either :)
