While i don't agree with either sides in this topic completely, i do understand some of the feelings from both sides.
While my native language is dutch and i use it daily to communicate to people in my surroundings, i don't exactly like the dutch language, i am much more comfortable with english.
I actively refuse to speak dutch to dutch people online, its a personal choice, being as that may i can totally see someone preferring their native language, my nephew is like that, while he can read/write/speak english on a basic level, he just won't bother going beyond that because it requires more effort then his dutch, his dutch will flow straight out of his mouth, while his english requires some extra 'processing' that just aint worth it. unless he is required to do english because x/y situation demands it he will stick to dutch.
Gaming is not something that 'demands' you to do anything, as such people should be free in their choice of communication.
It is however a slight annoyance to me when i run across the game world and coming across people that speak non-english in open channels, it causes that feeling that someone is talking behind your back kinda thing. its uncomfortable.
Ofcourse you can't force people to talk english in open channels, but it should be preferred.
A community is build upon communication between people, i commend people that actively switch to english during times where multiple nationalities gather, they are building bridges.
As such, please do talk english when in company of others or strive to accommodate to the others.
