Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04, Ryzom has been crashing after I select my character. It finishes loading with all of the quaint messages and as soon as the loading circle completes, the window closes.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well as updating the game from the upgrade location that I added to the software update protocols.

Is there anything anyone can think of to figure out what's going on? If you need me to check a log file, please specify where I should find the one that will give me the info. I'm not great with Linux, but I do like it more than Windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

Heh, and I was just thinking of upgrading. ~/.ryzom/client.log I guess.

Hi Cutetink,

got the same problem: Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 last Wednesday 2nd May, tried to play yesterday Sat 5th May and it crashed presumably at the exact point where the usual main game window pops up. Worked fine before with Ubuntu 11.10, This on a Laptop Toshiba Portege r700 with core i7 (Westmere) cpu and built-in cpu gfx.

My client.log: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=i3esmAgn

I'm usually playing on my SandyBridge i7 desktop but that's still on Ubuntu 11.10 and won't be upgraded before mid-June because I'm relying on stability for that (server) desktop. So unfortunately I won't be able to do testing on that machine.

It's pure speculation but I'd blame gfx drivers/settings first. Currently I lack time & willingness to look into it :-/

I messed with a few settings in the config file, but I got no results, or at least no different results.

At least, however, I am not the only one with the problem. I had zero problems with Ubuntu 11.10 as well.

Your client log looks different than mine did. I had a problem with main_loop.

I guess I will be playing on Windows for the time being.

are you on ati video cards?

#6 [en]

Mine is listed as Intel HD Graphics. I don't know if that qualifies as ATI or NVidia

#7 [en]

oh, no intel makes their own gpu's too.. dunno then.. i'd check the log.log

#8 [en]

or client.log as said ofc

#9 [en]

i just checked your paste and it doesn'tsays anything mine doesn't :p

log.log tends to be more verbose.. maybe you see something..

#10 [en]

This is the only entry I see. I'm not seeing the entry I saw before... At any rate, this is what I have:

[ 3396.033334] ryzom_client[2930] general protection ip:7f36ea82a151 sp:7fffd8d9ead0 error:0 in i965_dri.so[7f36ea795000+ce000]

Does that mean anything to you?

#11 [en]

i dunno much about ryzom, but i965 is your gpu and dri.so is some interface for direct rendering.. i'd say youre' right on with the driver being at fault..

the reason i asked about ati cards was that ati driver in repo isn't patched for kernel 3.2 in ubuntu12.04 i think.. but i think with intel is not the problem.. they are open source and allways work..:p maybe configuration..?

#12 [en]

if you check system settings->details what does it say under graphics?

#13 [en]

Good point. It says Driver Unknown. Perhaps it wasn't time for me to upgrade yet. Any idea how to go about fixing that problem? As I said before, not too schooled on Linux right now.

Update:

I ran this command: sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
My Graphics now says Intel Ironlake Mobile.

Ryzom still crashes just the same. Here is my error as it reads now from the syslog file:
[ 1601.388109] ryzom_client[4949] general protection ip:7f1ec37a9151 sp:7fff531f8610 error:0 in i965_dri.so[7f1ec3714000+ce000]

Looks the same to me. Thank you for your help up to this point. Do you have any further ideas?

#15 [en]

Did you install Ryzom from Software Center or via direct download from elsewhere? From what I understand, people seem to be having better luck with the former in your situation.

Seems like this game doesn't play very well with Intel GPUs. I've never seen water rendered on this game, personally. If I hear of anything else I'll post back. Thanks for letting the rest of us Ubuntu users know! Staying with 11.10 until I get a proper video card or until the bug is fixed.
